925 Silver Basket Tea Infuser: Function in Noble Form

The basket is the most proven shape for loose leaf tea: a shallow bowl with a sieve bottom that rests on the rim of the cup. The tea leaves lie loosely within, and hot water seeps through. When the tea is ready, you remove the basket — clean, simple, without dripping.

This basket is made of 925 sterling silver. This makes it heavier than stainless steel alternatives (approx. 44g instead of approx. 10g), but gives it a different quality: it feels like a tool that is worth something.

The Niello Ornament on the Tea Infuser

The outer wall of the sieve basket features a continuous niello ornament. Floral patterns — blossoms, tendrils, leaves — in the typical SevChern style, filled in black, on polished silver. The ornament covers a length of 99 mm and a width of 51 mm; the density of detail is high. The tea infuser looks like a piece of jewelry — and is a tool.

SevChern — Niello from Veliky Ustyug

SevChern has been manufacturing in Veliky Ustyug, Northern Russia, since 1683 and was awarded the gold medal in Paris in 1937. The niello technique involves six steps — engraving, preparation of the niello alloy, melting, cooling, grinding, polishing. The black is permanently embedded in the metal.

With a length of 99 mm and a width of 51 mm, it rests on cups with a diameter of 60 mm or more. It fits most standard teacups and common SevChern cups.

Can I also use the tea infuser for herbal tea or fruit tea?
Yes. The mesh size is suitable for all common loose leaf teas — black tea, green tea, herbal tea, fruit tea. For very finely cut herbs, you may need to use a paper filter insert.

What is Niello?
Niello is a blackening alloy that is melted into engraved silver indentations. It permanently bonds with the silver and does not flake off.
