Material and Workmanship

The oval silver relief made of 925 sterling silver depicts a dog in a classic pointer standing pose – one front paw raised, head facing forward. The fur hatching and the oak leaf ornamentation on the edge of the medallion are executed in Niello hand engraving: a dark alloy is melted into hand-engraved lines and chemically-physically bonded with the silver. This is not a coating, but part of the metal itself, and becomes more contrasting with each polish. The medallion is mounted on a green velvet passepartout, set in a dark wooden frame with a narrow gold trim on the inside – the oval shape and green velvet color are a deliberate special form within the collection.
