Description
The Rabbit wall art is a 925 sterling silver relief with niello hand-engraving in the fur design — a motif that carries three meanings: the Chinese zodiac sign Rabbit, the European Easter Bunny, and a classic hunting motif. It belongs to the Nielloa line ZODIAC, our collection of astrological animal motifs in niello silver.

Material and Workmanship
The rabbit's head is frontal, with long, upright ears, round eyes, and a calm expression. The fur texture is entirely executed in niello hand-engraving — fine dark lines that give depth to the silver relief. Below, an acanthus volute base supports the motif like a small coat of arms. Niello is one of the oldest silversmithing techniques and can best be compared to ink in silver: the dark mass does not sit on the surface but is melted into the hand-engraved lines and permanently bonded to the metal. Each stroke is applied by hand and has only one chance — if a line is not correct, the silversmith starts again. This results in small, individual differences in the lines, which show the signature of the respective master. The wall art is produced at SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, a center of Russian niello art with a tradition documented as far back as 1683.
Usage and Occasions
As a Chinese zodiac sign, the Rabbit (Wood element) stands for gentleness, diplomacy, and good fortune — Rabbit years were most recently 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011, and 2023, so this wall art holds personal significance for people born in these years. In European spring tradition, the rabbit is a symbol of fertility and new beginnings, making it a stylish alternative to the chocolate bunny at Easter. For hunters, the rabbit is also one of Europe's oldest small game hunting motifs and is a worthy wall piece for a study or hunting lodge. The rabbit can also be given as a gift for a birth or housewarming as a symbol of a good new beginning.
Engraving and SilberVerse Card
Upon request, we can engrave a date, name, or short dedication on the back or frame. For Easter gifts, the Easter date with names is popular; for New Year gifts, the date of the spring festival. With an engraving order, we include a personalized SilberVerse card in 15 × 10 cm photo format — individually designed, suitable for the occasion, and currently free of charge.
Care
Clean the silver surface with a soft polishing cloth — no abrasives, no direct water. The niello becomes more contrasting with each polish because the surrounding silver brightens and the dark lines stand out more. The wooden frame remains stable without special care, as long as it is not constantly exposed to moist air.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it a hare or a rabbit?
The motif depicts a hare — recognizable by its long, upright ears and slimmer head shape. It is also the appropriate motif for the Chinese zodiac sign and the European Easter bunny.
Is it genuine niello or just blackened silver?
Genuine niello. The fur lines are genuine niello mass, melted in an open flame and permanently bonded to the silver — not artificial oxidation.
Are all Rabbit wall art pieces identical?
Each piece is hand-engraved, the niello lines are hand-melted. Even with the same motif, there are small individual differences in the line work because each master has their own signature.
