Material and craftsmanship

The rabbit head is depicted frontally with upright long ears, round eyes, and a calm expression. The fur texture is entirely executed in hand-engraved niello—fine dark lines that give depth to the silver relief. Below, an acanthus scroll base supports the motif like a small crest. Niello is one of the oldest silversmithing techniques, best compared to ink in silver: the dark compound does not sit on the surface but is fused into the hand-engraved lines and permanently bonded to the metal. Every stroke is placed by hand and there is only one chance—if a line is not perfectly placed, the silversmith must start over. This creates small, individual differences in the lines that reveal the hand of the individual master craftsman. The wall art is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, a center of Russian niello art with a tradition documented as far back as 1683.

Clean the silver surface with a soft polishing cloth—no abrasives, no direct contact with water. The niello will become more contrast-rich with every polish because the surrounding silver becomes brighter and the dark lines stand out more sharply.
