The 925 sterling silver relief depicts a compass rose with eight compass points, framed by a ship's wheel rim with spokes and degree markings. The compass lines and the ship's wheel details are executed in hand-engraved niello: a dark alloy is melted into hand-engraved lines, chemically and physically bonding with the silver. Geometric motifs like this require particular precision, as every spoke must be at the same angle and every compass point must be symmetrical. The relief is mounted on a blue velvet mat board and housed in a mahogany-brown wooden frame with a narrow gold-colored decorative inner trim. The motif itself is not gilded — the contrast is created solely by the silver and the niello.
