Material and Workmanship
The relief made of 925 sterling silver depicts a compass rose with eight compass points, framed by a ship's wheel rim with spokes and a degree scale. The compass lines and the ship's wheel details are executed in Niello hand engraving: a dark alloy is melted into hand-engraved lines and chemically-physically bonded with the silver. Geometric motifs like this one require particular precision, as each spoke must be at the same angle and each compass point symmetrical. The relief is mounted on a blue velvet mat, set in a mahogany-brown wooden frame with a narrow golden trim on the inside. The motif itself has no gilding — the contrast arises solely from silver and niello.
The piece belongs to the CLASSIC line of the Nielloa Collection, which we curate at SilberKosmos — symbolic artworks with cultural depth, crafted by the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, a Russian center of silversmithing since 1683.
Use and Occasions
Since the 14th century, the compass rose has been one of the most universal symbols of orientation in cultural history — on every sea chart and compass, its points indicate the cardinal directions. The ship's wheel complements it with an active dimension: the compass rose shows the direction, the ship's wheel steers toward it. Together, they stand for a clear course and the ability to maintain it.
As a gift, the motif suits business people and entrepreneurs who wish to convey a desire for smooth progress and a clear course, as well as for retirement after a long professional career. For sailors and boat owners, the ship's wheel is a familiar symbol of identity, while for a study abroad year or time spent abroad, it is given as a wish to "find your way." The compass rose also universally works as a general symbol for good winds on birthdays, New Year's, or housewarmings.
If you already own a piece of wall art from the Nielloa CLASSIC line, you can add the compass rose as a gallery partner — for example, to the lucky horseshoe or the goldfish. The three CLASSIC motifs each represent a distinct wish: orientation, luck, and prosperity.
Engraving and SilberVerse Card
Upon request, we can engrave the date, names, or a short dedication on the back or frame — company name and founding date are popular for business gifts, or name and last day of work for retirement. For an engraving order, we also include a SilberVerse card in 15 × 10 cm format: a digitally designed, unique photo with your desired text — currently free with every engraving.
Care
Occasionally treat the silver surface with a soft polishing cloth — avoid abrasive cleaners and direct water. The niello compass lines will even become more contrasting over time as the surrounding silver is polished brighter. The wooden frame requires no special care but should not be exposed to a continuously damp environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly does the motif show?
A compass rose with eight compass points for the eight main cardinal directions, encased in a ship's wheel — two maritime symbols in one motif.
Does the motif have gilding?
No, the motif itself is pure 925 sterling silver with niello engraving. The golden trim belongs to the frame, not to the silver relief.
Does the compass rose make a good gift even without a maritime connection?
Yes, it universally stands for orientation and a clear course and also works as a business or birthday gift without a connection to seafaring.
