Material and Workmanship

The restraint of this cocktail glass is intentional. While other stemware in the collection feature dense ornamentation across the entire cup, this piece is limited to a single narrow niello band at the upper rim – blossoms and vines in deep niello black, neatly framed and finished with a dentil frieze. The martini shape thrives on its geometry: the wide opening, the clear line to the stem, the small base. Denser ornamentation would disrupt these lines – the narrow band accentuates instead, without overpowering.

Niello is a millennia-old inlay technique: motifs are engraved into silver, then a molten alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur fills the depressions. It chemically bonds with the base metal – not a lacquer, not a paint, but a permanent fusion. The glass is crafted by the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug.
