The Ring Motif — No Random Ornament

On both champagne glasses, two interlocking rings are central — framed by gold volutes and niello acanthus. In Slavic tradition, these intertwined rings symbolize marriage as a bond that cannot be broken without breaking one of the two. Exactly the motif that belongs on the champagne glasses with which the bridal couple makes their first toast as a married couple.

The rings are rendered in silver hand engraving in line relief. Niello (a black sulfur-silver alloy) fills the engraved depressions, melted at 800 degrees. This remains as it is — niello does not fade, and the rings in the ornament are just as legible after 50 years as they were on the wedding day. Between them, the fine gold plating shines, giving the ornament its warm accents.

The special feature of these champagne glasses is the triad of three materials: the polished 925 silver of the outer surfaces, the fine gold plating on the rim, base, and central ornament accents, and the deep black niello for the rings and volutes. How do I care for the champagne glasses correctly?
Only hand wash, lukewarm water, soft cloth, dry immediately. Never put in the dishwasher — hot dish soap attacks the gilding. No silver dip (dissolves the fine gold layer). Do not scour the interior gilding. Niello remains dark on its own.
