Material and craftsmanship

Saint George the Victorious is the patron saint of Moscow: a rider in armor on a white horse, his spear pointed downwards, piercing the dragon beneath his hooves. This motif has appeared on the Moscow city coat of arms since the 1 4th century and on the Russian state coat of arms since 1497. On this stem glass, it is executed as a medallion in niello hand-engraving - every line drawn by hand into the silver, the niello inlaid by hand. All around, dense floral ornamentation covers the entire bowl. On the foot, the Cyrillic inscription "МОСКВА," framed by palmette ornaments, complements the reference to the city. Inside, warm fine gold glows, and the rim and foot ring bear additional golden accents. The stem glass is created in the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, where niello silversmithing has been cultivated for generations, from the drawing and hand-engraving to the niello inlay and final polishing.
