Material and Workmanship

The ornament on this goblet does not run horizontally around the body like most niello pieces, but diagonally: a diamond-shaped field of floral medallions and scrollwork that wraps around the goblet like a band. Narrow niello bands frame the composition at the top and bottom. This diagonal guides the eye instead of holding it – a design decision that distinguishes this glass from classic horizontal niello patterns. The niello alloy is melted into the hand-engraved depressions, forming a permanent bond with the silver – no print, no coating. Without gilding, the contrast between polished silver and black niello remains unbroken and visible. Manufactured in the SevChern factory in Veliky Ustyug, where this hand-engraving tradition has been cultivated for generations.
