Niello is a black metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is burned in at over 800 degrees Celsius, permanently bonding with the silver base — not a coating, but a lasting chemical-physical fusion. The dark ornamental lines on light silver create a contrast that becomes sharper with the years instead of fading.
