Material and Workmanship

The coupé shape, also known as the champagne saucer, is the older of the two classic champagne glass shapes — prevalent even before the slender flute. The wide, shallow bowl allows the beverage to breathe and gives the aromas space. In this silver goblet, the shape comes with a sturdy stem and a wide base that gives the piece stability; the bowl itself is wider than it is tall, a proportional ratio that exudes tranquility. Around the belly of the bowl, a band of stylized sunflower heads is framed by leaves and tendrils — every line hand-engraved into the silver, the black niello alloy then hand-melted in the flame. Because this piece is executed without gilding, the interplay between polished silver and black niello is unfiltered: no warm golden tone interfering, but silver and black in a clear, graphic juxtaposition.
