Description

"Laune" Dessert Bowl — 925 Silver Gilded, Niello Arabesques, 130 ml

100 mm diameter, 72 mm height, 130 ml. Small — but that's how it is with pieces where every millimeter is perfect. The "Laune" is not a large bowl that takes up space on the table. It is a piece that sits on the table and transforms it. The gilded interior glows warmly. The frosted silver exterior features a continuous niello band with baroque arabesques and acanthus tendrils — deep black, precise, hand-engraved. A gilded strip above and below frames it. The result is a triad of gold, silver, and black, weighing 160 g in the hand and sitting on the table as if it were made for that exact table.

In 1937, SevChern was awarded the gold medal at the World Exhibition in Paris — for niello silver from Veliky Ustyug, which the jury deemed the best of its kind. The "Laune" is a piece from this lineage: the same city, the same technique, the same care.

The Pedestal Shape — Presence Without a Stem

Not a dessert coupe on a long stem — the "Laune" stands on a compact pedestal that gives the bowl its height and stability. The conical shape widens upwards: narrow at the bottom, wide at the top, with a slightly flared rim. This is a design language known from the world of crystal glasses and classic silverware tradition — upright, clear, with a silhouette that is immediately recognizable.

What this shape achieves at the table: The bowl stands firm. It doesn't slide, doesn't tip, doesn't need a stem that could be knocked over. The contents lie in the gilded interior like in a small theater. Ice cream, mousse, sorbet, caviar — whatever you place in it will look better against warm gold than in any other vessel.

Gold Inside, Niello Outside — a Deliberate Contrast

Gilding and niello are not mixed in the "Laune," but applied separately — and this separation is key. The entire interior is fully gilded: a warm, rich gold tone on highly polished silver. Additionally, a gilded strip at the top rim and one at the base. The exterior, on the other hand, is frosted — no gold, no shine, just the subdued silk silver of the brushed surface.

Exactly there sits the niello band: deep black on matte silver, framed by the golden lines above and below. The arabesques — curved tendrils, symmetrical leaves, spirals — completely fill the band. Each line was hand-engraved into the silver with a burin, each indentation filled and fired with niello alloy. What emerges is not a printed pattern. It is a drawing that has become part of the metal.

The triad of warm gold (interior), deep niello black (outer band), and matte silver (exterior) is no coincidence — it is the hallmark of the Laune collection. Three tones that elevate each other: The gold shines more brightly next to the matte silver. The niello appears deeper next to the gold. The silver holds everything together.

Arabesques and Acanthus — the Baroque Ornament

The niello motif of the "Laune" belongs to the formal language of European Baroque — arabesques and acanthus tendrils that reached their peak in 17th and 18th-century goldsmithing. SevChern has transferred this ornamentation to the niello tradition of Veliky Ustyug: The manufactory's engravers master the classical repertoire and execute it with the precision that only comes from decades of practice.

The result is an ornamental band that does not look like a repeated stencil, but like a composition: tendrils flowing into each other, spirals opening, leaves folding. Whoever picks up the "Laune" and turns it will always see something new in the band — a sign of good hand-engraving.

As a Dessert Bowl, Gift, and Collector's Item

130 ml is the portion size for: a sorbet, a panna cotta, chocolate mousse, caviar with accompaniments. The conical shape displays the contents well — from above you see the entire surface, from the side the niello band. Both simultaneously on the table.

Empty, the "Laune" is a decorative piece. In a display cabinet, on a sideboard, next to other SevChern pieces — it doesn't need content to make an impression. The gilded interior catches the light and returns it warmly.

As a gift, the "Laune" suits people who take table culture seriously and can distinguish gilding from cheap gold-look. For a wedding — gold as the color of "I do." For a milestone birthday — a piece that will last for decades. For a silver wedding anniversary, for a golden wedding anniversary — both fit here, the silver and the gold. For collectors of Russian silverware: SevChern, niello hand-engraving, gilding, full hallmarking — all characteristics of a serious piece.

Engraving, SilberVerse Card & Care

The base offers space on its underside for a personal engraving — date, initials, a phrase. For gifts that someone will keep, this is the right addition. Please specify your engraving request when ordering.

On request, we can include a personal SilberVerse card in photo format (10×15 cm) — individually designed, suitable for the occasion, currently free of charge.

Care: Hand wash only with lukewarm water and mild dish soap. No dishwasher, no silver dip — both will damage the gilding. Never treat the gilded surfaces with abrasive cleaners. The niello band is fused and durable — normal cleaning will not harm it. You can refresh the frosted silver exterior with a soft silver polishing cloth without destroying the character of the brushed surface. Store in the gift box.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "fully gilded interior" mean?
The entire interior of the bowl — the conical inner surface and the base — is gilded. Not as a thin layer, but as a rich, highly polished gilding on solid 925 silver. In addition, there is the upper rim strip and the foot rim. The exterior is deliberately kept without gilding to enhance the contrast.

Is the bowl suitable for hot and cold food?
Yes — 925 silver is food-safe and temperature-stable. For cold desserts such as sorbet or ice cream, it is recommended to chill the bowl shortly before serving: silver absorbs cold quickly and retains it longer than porcelain. For warm desserts, the bowl works just as well. Just no direct flame or oven.

What is the difference to a dessert coupe on a stem?
The "Laune" stands on a solid pedestal — no moving parts, no stem that could tip over. This makes it more stable on the table and easier to handle. The pedestal shape gives it a more compact, solid silhouette — more bowl than glass.

Can I combine several pieces for a table setting?
Yes — the "Laune" can be ordered as a single piece, but can also be combined as a set for multiple place settings. Contact us when ordering, we will coordinate the made-to-order production for multiple pieces.
