Description
"Ay-da honey! It hits both the head and the feet. Too bad it's bitter." — Ah, what a mead! It hits your head and your legs. Too bad it's bitter. This saying runs in Old Russian script in a circle over the silver plate that belongs to this chalice. And it's a joke: because mead isn't bitter — mead is sweet, honey-sweet. The "bitterness" is the hangover the next morning, the wobbly legs on the way home, the realization that you've had too much to drink. And the saying means: "Too bad." Not "I regret it." Just: "Too bad." That's Russian humor. Self-deprecating, dry, engraved in silver and filled with niello. On a chalice called TSAR — because that's how it behaves.
Masterpieces and collectibles made of 925 sterling silver
Magnificent chalices, repoussé high relief, niello hand engraving, gemstones. Museum quality.
Discover silver masterpiecesTwo parts, one story — the chalice and its plate
This set consists of two parts that belong together like a joke and its punchline. The chalice above — 158 mm high, 290 ml, in a trumpet shape that opens upwards like a call. The plate below — 129 mm in diameter, with the toast in a circle and in the center a figure: a man holding a drinking horn in one hand and a bucket in the other — he fetched the mead himself and is drinking it on the spot. The perfect illustration for the saying. Together approx. 477 g of sterling silver. The plate serves three functions: as a coaster when the chalice is standing, as a lid when it is stored, and as a stage on which the inscription performs.
The Repoussé Flowers — three-dimensional silver
What distinguishes this chalice from all others in the assortment: the middle zone of the cup is not engraved — it is repoussé. Repoussé technique: the silver sheet is worked from the back with hundreds of small hammer blows until the flowers grow forward. Three-dimensional. Petals that curve, stems that bend, leaves that arch. The entire zone is gilded — golden flowers growing out of the silver. This is not an engraving, this is a sculpture. And it is the most elaborate technique a silversmith can master.
Above it: a niello band with medallions and geometric patterns — the crown of the chalice. Below it: the knob with red garnets as cabochons, individually set, glowing dark red. And golden handles that make the chalice rotatable. Inside: completely gilded — gold that protects the contents and glows warmly in candlelight.
Mead — the forgotten drink of kings
Before vodka came, there was mead. Brewed from honey, fermented for months, sometimes years. The best meads matured in oak barrels, buried in the ground. A mead that had aged for twenty years was considered a treasure. Mead was the drink of Kievan princes, of weddings, of victories. When a prince won, mead flowed. When a son was born, mead flowed.
Then came distillery technology in the 15th century. Vodka: stronger, cheaper, faster. Mead was forgotten. But the sayings remained. And the joke remained: mead is sweet, but its consequences are "bitter." The TSAR chalice preserves this joke in silver — so that it will not be forgotten.
The display box — SevChern builds a museum
SevChern has done something for this chalice that they do for no other piece: they had a custom-made glass display box created for it. Cylindrical glass, wooden base, wooden lid with the SevChern signature "Северная Чернь". The chalice stands in it like in a museum display case — visible from all sides, protected from dust and touch, presented like an exhibit.
The message is: this piece does not belong in a cupboard. It belongs on display. On a shelf, on a desk, in a display case — where it can be seen. The display box is part of the set and is included.
Who the TSAR chalice is for
Collectors with a sense of humor: They understand that the best works of art are not always serious. A toast to mead in Old Russian script, on a silver plate with garnets — that's irony at the highest level.
Men who drink heavily and laugh about it: Not every chalice has to be solemn. This one says: "Yes, this drink has power over me — and I respect that." That's not weakness, that's self-awareness.
Diplomats and business: A humorous but noble gift. A joke cast in silver will never be forgotten. In the recipient's library, this chalice stands in its display case and everyone who reads the inscription smiles.
Lovers of Russian culture: Mead, niello, repoussé, Old Russian script, garnets — a half-millennium of Russian craftsmanship and drinking culture united in a single set.
As a pair with the magnificent chalices: Together with the St. Petersburg Chalice and the Moscow Chalice, the TSAR forms a trio: two cities and their king.
Frequently asked questions about the TSAR chalice
What does the inscription on the plate mean?
"Ay-da honey! It hits both the head and the feet. Too bad it's bitter." — "Ah, what a mead! It hits your head and your legs. Too bad it's bitter." An old Russian toast with self-deprecating humor: mead is sweet, not bitter — the "bitterness" is the consequences the next morning.
What is repoussé?
A chasing technique in which the silver sheet is hammered from the reverse side until the motifs grow out three-dimensionally. The golden flowers on the central zone of the chalice are made in this way — they are not engraved, but chased. The most elaborate silversmithing technique.
What is the display box?
A custom-made glass display case by SevChern with a wooden base and lid. The chalice stands in it like in a museum — visible, protected, presented. On the lid is the SevChern signature "Северная Чернь". The display case is part of the set.
Can you drink from the chalice?
Yes — 925 silver is food-safe, as is the internal gilding. 290 ml is a generous drink. Traditionally with mead, but also with vodka, cognac, or wine. Clean with warm water.
What gemstones are set?
Red garnets as cabochons — on the knob of the chalice and on the handles of the plate. 6-8 stones in total, individually set.
Is additional engraving possible?
Upon request — the oval cartouche on the cup seems to be intended as an engraving surface. Initials, name, or date can be engraved there.
