Description

Oval Silver Tray in 925 Silver and Gold Plating — Hand-Engraved Troika Scene in the Center

Gold frames silver. Ornament frames narrative. Warmth frames coolness. On this oval tray crafted from 925 sterling silver, two principles converge, complementing each other for centuries in Russian silversmithing: the decorative power of gold and the narrative depth of engraving. The rim — sculpturally crafted acanthus rocaille in a warm gilded sheen. The center — a silver picture medallion, hand-engraved with a troika scene: three horses in a sleigh, winter landscape, a coachman riding as if he doesn't want to arrive. Made by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug. Approx. 975 g. Gift box included.

Three Zones — Gold, Silence, History

The tray is not a single casting, but rather constructed from three clearly discernible layers — and it is precisely this structure that makes it more than just a serving piece.

The outermost zone is the loudest: continuous acanthus rocaille, sculpturally worked out of the silver, completely gilded. Four cartouches at the ends of the longitudinal and transverse axes provide accents — symmetrical, clear, baroque. The gold in this zone is warm, rich, prominent. It draws the eye first.

Then follows the middle zone: a wide, smooth ring surface, also gilded, but calm. No relief, no ornament — just the gentle glow of the gold as a transition. This zone is the frame that gathers the gaze and leads it to the center.

The center is cooler, brighter, quieter: the oval picture medallion in a natural silver finish, matte, without gold. Here, the hand engraving comes alive — fine lines that tell a story, not merely decorate. Gold can shine. Engraved silver can narrate. On this tray, both do so simultaneously — and neither interrupts the other.

The Troika — Three Horses, a Russian Archetype

The troika is not a motif. It is an image more deeply rooted in Russian cultural memory than almost any other. Three horses side by side — the middle horse trotting, the outer ones galloping, so that all three maintain the same rhythm — have pulled the fastest sleighs across the vast plains of Russia for centuries. Not three horses in a line, as is common elsewhere, but three side by side: wider, more striking, more powerful.

Gogol wrote about the troika in the last chapter of "Dead Souls" — and meant Russia itself: Where are you rushing? Where are you flying? The answer is absent. The horses gallop on.

On this tray, they gallop to the right, the sleigh is light and narrow, the coachman sits upright. In the background, a hint of a winter landscape — horizon, vast plain, cold. The engraving conveys this in lines: fine, precise, varying in thickness and depth, so that the horses appear corporeal and the landscape recedes. Each line was hand-engraved. No laser, no machine pattern — a narrative pictorial composition that embodies hours of craftsmanship.

Hand Engraving — How a Scene Comes to Silver

Engraving is the oldest technique of metal ornamentation. A burin — a hardened steel tool with a diamond-shaped tip — is guided by hand and removes material from the silver surface. Deep lines appear darker, shallow ones lighter. This creates light and shadow without color — solely through the interplay of indentation and reflection.

The troika scene on this tray demonstrates what experienced engravers can do: The horses have muscles. The coachman has weight. The winter landscape has depth. Not because they were painted, but because the burin was guided with varying force and direction — broad cross-hatching in the background, finer lines for fur and contour. A technique that cannot be translated. It is either there — or it is not.

925 Silver and Gold Plating — Two Precious Metals, One Object

925 Sterling Silver means: 92.5% pure silver, 7.5% copper as an alloying metal for dimensional stability and strength. This is the highest fineness commonly used internationally for functional silver objects. The Russian state hallmark on the tray is official proof — 925, manufacturer's mark SevChern, control mark.

The gold plating is an electrolytic layer on the silver: 0.5 microns of gold, applied warmly and evenly. The gold bonds at a molecular level with the silver and adheres permanently, as long as the piece is not mechanically abraded. Soft cloths, gentle cleaning — the gold plating will last.

Two precious metals on one object is not uncommon in Russian silversmithing — it is the principle that distinguishes the most representative pieces. Gold for dignity and warmth. Silver for narration and coolness. This contrast is not accidental but intentional: the tray is meant to embody both.

SevChern Veliky Ustyug — The Atelier Behind the Object

Veliky Ustyug is located in Northern Russia and has been one of the most important centers of Russian silver processing since the 17th century. Engravings, gilded silver, niello work — Veliky Ustyug has preserved all classical techniques with artisanal depth. SevChern is one of the few enterprises that still fully continues this tradition in its own ateliers today.

The geographically protected designation of origin ensures: genuine silverworks from Veliky Ustyug may only be produced there. What the hallmark on this tray proves is not a marketing statement — it is a legally regulated, state-controlled indication of origin.

As a Gift — For Moments to Be Remembered

An oval silver tray with hand-engraved troika and gold plating is not the kind of gift you buy and immediately understand. It's the kind of gift that grows over time — one that surprises when unwrapped, impresses with its first use, and years later still sits on the table, prompting questions. Where did this come from? Who made it? What does the scene mean?

For a wedding: a piece that remains on the shared table when other gifts are forgotten. For a milestone birthday or anniversary: an object that carries weight — literally and figuratively. As a corporate gift for special occasions: representative, unique, culturally significant. A personal engraving makes it a piece belonging to a specific person and a specific moment. SevChern individually assesses for each piece which engraving style and placement are technically feasible, and provides concrete suggestions. A SilverVerse card is also possible upon request: 10 × 15 cm, individually inscribed.

Care, Cleaning, and Frequently Asked Questions

Hand wash with warm water and mild detergent — a soft cloth is sufficient. No dishwasher, no aggressive cleaning agents, no abrasive powders. Gently remove tarnish from silver with a silver polishing cloth. The gold plating is more delicate than the silver itself — use soft materials, no abrasive agents.

What material is the tray made of?
925 Sterling Silver with electrolytic gold plating (0.5 microns). The silver has a fineness of 92.5%, the gold plating is electroplated. All parts bear the Russian state hallmark. Dimensions: L 415 mm × W 280 mm × H 10 mm, weight approx. 975 g.

What does the troika motif mean?
The troika — three horses side by side — is one of the central symbols of Russian folk art and culture. It represents freedom, vastness, and the Russian soul. The winter motif (sleigh, landscape) is the most classic form of troika depiction with precedents in Russian art of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Is the troika scene hand-engraved?
Yes — the figurative scene in the center is hand-engraved. Each line was hand-carved into the silver with a burin. The result is a pictorial scene with varying line thicknesses and light-shadow contrasts that cannot be achieved by machine.

How long does the gold plating last?
The electrolytic gold plating (0.5 microns) adheres permanently as long as it is not mechanically damaged. No scrubbing, no abrasive agents, no dishwasher. With gentle care, the gold plating will last permanently.

Can the tray be engraved?
Yes, upon request. SevChern individually assesses which engraving style and placement are possible on the already engraved piece and provides concrete suggestions. Please contact us before ordering.

What occasions is this tray suitable for?
As a wedding gift, for a silver wedding anniversary, for a milestone birthday or anniversary, as a prestigious corporate gift, or as a collector's item of Russian silversmithing. The object is functionally usable and simultaneously a work of art.
