Description

You hold it in your hand—and immediately notice that something is different. Not just the size, not the shine, not the weight alone: it's the stillness emanating from this object. The oval tray of 925 sterling silver reveals three worlds on one surface. In the middle: polished silver, highly polished to a mirror finish, pure and empty like a stage awaiting its performance. All around: a wide frame in warm gold, densely set with acanthus scrolls and classical baroque volutes—engraved, chased, gilded, layer by layer. And embedded in the ornaments: the dark Niello inlays, black-blue and matte, giving contour to the gold. Three tones—silver, gold, black—on a single tray.

This is no accident. This is composition. And this composition speaks a language that every room understands.

Three Surfaces, Three Techniques — the Composition of this Tray

Those who perceive a tray merely as a surface miss the essential. This oval silver tray is a composition of three clearly defined zones—and each zone has its own language, its own technique, its own effect.

The central area belongs to light. Polished 925 sterling silver, brought to a mirror finish—no engraving, no ornament, no texture. This decision is radical: leaving an almost 30 cm wide metal surface empty is a conscious choice. The silver center reflects everything placed on it or hovering above it—light, glasses, carafes, faces. It makes the room feel larger and more expansive. It is the stage where objects truly unfold their effect.

The frame is the opposite: dense, warm, dynamic. Gilded 925 silver, engraved and chased with classical baroque patterns—acanthus leaves, volutes, leaf and tendril motifs. The gold is warm, not excessively yellow. It is the gold of late 19th-century Russian silversmithing: subtle, rich, patinated in the best sense.

And embedded in the ornamental engravings: Niello. A black-blue, matte inlay, burned into the engraved lines. Niello is the black that gives the gold its contour. Without Niello, the gilded frame would blend into itself. With Niello, every scroll, every leaf, every volute gets its clear finish. The three tones—silver-white, warm gold, black-blue—work as a system, not merely as decoration.

The structured outer edge with its chased pearl pattern forms the finish—a classic signature of Russian silversmithing: not a smooth edge, but an ornament as a conclusion.

Gilding and Engraving — What Really Happens in the Border Area

The galvanic gilding with a thickness of 0.5 microns is a technical decision that should be understood. For solid 925 sterling silver as the base material, 0.5 microns of galvanically applied gold means a permanent, chemically stable bond with the silver body—sufficient for long-term use, for cleaning, for the decades of use that an object of this class is expected to endure. The gold tone is deliberately chosen: warm, not garish, a classic rose gold spectrum that enters into harmonious tension with the silver instead of overpowering it.

However, gilding is not the first step—it is the last. Before the gold is applied, the frame is engraved.

Engraving is one of the oldest metalworking techniques of all: a hardened graver deliberately removes metal, line by line, curve by curve. The acanthus ornaments, the volutes, the tendril motifs of the frame—all are created by material removal. Every line is a decision. Every indentation a step.

Chasing complements engraving: where engraving sets the rough contours, chasing refines them. It works without material removal—it pushes and presses the metal, giving plastic depth to the ornaments, rounding transitions, transforming a line into a form. Engraving and chasing together create what you see: a frame that doesn't look flat, but plastic, three-dimensional, lively.

Only after this work comes the gilding. And the gilding seals everything: it protects the engraved lines from oxidation, preserves the contrasts of the engraving, and gives the frame its warm color.

Niello — The Black That Gives Gold Its Contour

Niello is one of the oldest refining techniques in goldsmithing. Its history spans over 3,000 years—from the workshops of ancient Egypt through Byzantine goldsmiths to the Russian silversmithing tradition, where it remains vibrant today. In Europe, Niello has become extremely rare. What you see here cannot be replicated by lacquer, enamel, or printing ink.

Niello is a black alloy—of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur. It is applied in powder form to the previously engraved indentations and fired at high temperatures. During firing, the Niello mass physically bonds with the base material. No layer is formed that can peel off. A single unit is created.

The result is a three-part color composition: the silver-white of the polished central area, the warm gold of the frame, the black-blue of the Niello. None of these tones exists alone—they define each other. Niello does not weaken with time—it deepens. The more often the tray is polished, the more the contrasts emerge.

975 Grams — The Language of Weight

There are objects you touch and immediately know: This is real. Not because of a stamp, not because of a certificate—but because of the weight. Approx. 975 grams of 925 sterling silver have a density that every counterfeit lacks. This tray is not hollow, not a lightweight construction, not gilded sheet metal. It is solid sterling silver—from surface to base.

The hallmark confirms it: 925—the international silver standard, 925 parts pure silver per 1,000 parts alloy. The format—approx. 41.5 × 28 cm, oval—is the classic shape for a prestigious tray program. A carafe and two glasses can be placed on its 41.5 cm length. A champagne bowl, a silver spoon, a sugar bowl—everything fits into the oval without crowding.

Holding 975 grams in your hand changes the moment. Anyone who places this tray on a table makes a statement. Anyone who carries it carries something serious.

Use and Effect — What This Tray Does to a Room

In the private bar or lounge: Crystal whiskey carafe, two tumbler glasses, a silver opener—all on the polished silver mirror. The center of the tray reflects the light, the crystal, the color of the contents. The tray takes center stage.

In the prestigious reception room: on a marble console, a sideboard, a dark wood desk. Even without contents, the tray is an object in itself—a mirror, a frame, an eye-catcher.

As a display exhibit: The tray belongs to a category defined as "Russian silver, academic historicism"—a category with growing collector demand.

And in actual use: 925 sterling silver with Niello inlays and galvanic gilding is food-safe. You can serve on this tray. Champagne, caviar, chocolates—each object gains a different standing.

As a Gift — When and for Whom

Company Anniversary, Award, Executive Gift: When a company reaches 25, 50, or 100 years—when a managing director retires—one seeks an object that stands in the office for decades and says: "Someone understood the value of this achievement."

For the Collector: Those who collect Russian silver or historicist silversmithing know the rarity of such a piece in this quality. 975 g of solid 925 silver with Niello inlays and galvanic gilding—made to order from the manufactory.

For a Wedding or Silver Wedding: An oval silver tray with baroque ornamentation is a classic high-end wedding gift—one that the recipients will display, show, and keep.

Engraving and Personal Dedication

A personal engraving can be applied to the polished central surface—a name, a date, a dedication, a monogram. A deeply engraved inscription stands out against the polished silver as a clear, permanent line.

Upon request, we will include a personalized SilberVerse card in photo format (10x15 cm)—individually designed, suitable for the occasion, and currently free of charge. Simply state your request in the comment field when ordering.

Frequently Asked Questions about this Silver Tray

What processing techniques were used for this tray?

The tray combines several classic silversmithing techniques: solid 925 sterling silver as the base body, engraving of ornaments (graver, material removal), chasing for plastic deepening of the motifs, Niello inlay in the engraved depressions (black alloy, fired at 800°C), galvanic gilding (0.5 microns) of the frame, high-polish finish of the central area, and a structured pearl pattern outer edge. At least six to seven distinct manufacturing steps.

What does "gilding 0.5 microns" mean—how durable is it?

Galvanic gilding with a layer thickness of 0.5 microns means a gold layer permanently bonded to the silver base body. With proper care—no aggressive scrubbing, no chlorine-containing cleaners—this gilding lasts for many decades. The gilded ornamental lines are additionally protected by the Niello.

How do I care for a tray with Niello inlays and gilding?

For the polished silver central area, a soft silver polishing cloth is suitable. Clean the gilded areas with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid chlorine-containing cleaners, dishwashing cycles, and silver immersion cleaners. With regular care, the contrasts between the gilded frame and Niello will become deeper and more pronounced.

Is the tray food-safe and suitable for serving?

Yes. 925 sterling silver is a classic food contact material. Niello inlays are fired alloys that behave chemically inert after firing. The galvanic gilding is also food-safe. The tray is suitable for cold food and drinks, as well as for presenting glasses and carafes.
