A round silver plate made of solid 925 sterling with a geometric niello border on the rim: two circumferential niello lines at the top and bottom edge, between which are four corner ornaments with palm-leaf-like volutes arranged symmetrically. The center — the polished silver mirror — remains smooth and unornamented: space for dessert, fruit, bread, a piece of pastry or an amuse-bouche. Handcrafted in the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Northern Russia. The Niello Pattern on the Rim — Art Deco Ornament of the Hunting Collection

The niello pattern of this plate follows an Art Deco-inspired ornamental principle: two parallel circumferential niello lines frame the rim at the top and bottom. Between the lines are four symmetrically distributed corner ornaments — each a composition of palm-leaf-like volutes and geometric lines, inlaid into the polished 925 silver. The contrast between deep black niello and bright silver is clearly visible from any distance. The pattern is part of the SevChern hunting collection — one of the four main ornamental families of the manufactory, which is used as a design language across plates, decanters, hip flasks and goblets. The geometric reduction of this pattern is particularly well suited to modern table arrangements.

Rim and Mirror — the Design Principle of the Plate

The plate is divided into two zones. The rim (the raised edge) features the niello ornament and makes the hunting collection pattern clearly visible. The mirror (the flat center) remains highly polished and without ornament — space for food, nothing distracts. With a diameter of 150 mm, the plate is suitable as a dessert plate, bread plate, amuse-bouche base, praline presentation plate or as a decorative/display piece. 140g of solid 925 silver make it a noticeably valuable unique piece.

Niello — Russian Silversmithing from Veliky Ustyug

Niello is a blackening alloy of silver, copper, lead and sulfur. At over 800 degrees Celsius, it is melted into the hand-engraved depressions and permanently bonds with the silver. No application, no coating — the black is IN the metal. The technique has been cultivated in Veliky Ustyug since 1683 and is geographically protected like Champagne. SevChern is one of the few workshops worldwide that still traditionally carries out niello hand engraving. In 1937, the manufactory received the gold medal at the World's Fair in Paris for this. Each plate bears the artist's manufactory mark, registered annually with the Russian Federal Assay Office.

Care of the Silver Plate

Hand wash with warm water and mild detergent. No dishwasher. No silver dip — this would damage the niello inlay. Soft cloth for the polished mirror, silver polishing cloth for light patina if necessary. Storage in the gift box or protected from light prevents tarnishing.
