It is hand-engraved — each line drawn by a graver — and filled with niello: a black metal alloy that is melted into the engraved depressions at over 800 degrees and chemically bonded to the base silver. What results is insoluble. The ornament on this sugar bowl does not fade, peel, or require any maintenance. In thirty years, the band will look exactly as it does today.
