Material and workmanship

The carafe is the centerpiece of the set: the body tapers upwards to a narrow neck, the handle sweeps in an elegant curve, the lid closes with a hinge and features a petal as a knob. The niello flowers are generously and openly worked—on the wide surface of the body, they have space, rather than condensing into a dense band. Individual floral compositions are distributed over the polished silver surface, more like flowers in a garden than a continuous ornamental band.

The glasses in the set bear the same floral niello as the carafe—not identically copied, but in the same handwriting: same flower shape, same engraving style, same ratio between ornament and polished silver. The niello inlay is hand-engraved and the dark compound is then melted in—a permanent bond with the silver, not a lacquer. The set is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, where niello art has been documented since 1683.

Use and occasions

A capacity of 1,100 ml is sufficient for a smaller dinner party—for water or wine at a festive dinner, where the carafe, with its weight of approx. 1,269 g, creates a noticeable presence on the table. Care

Clean by hand with lukewarm water and mild dish soap; do not put in the dishwasher. Do not scrub the niello surfaces; a soft cloth is sufficient for daily use. With occasional polishing with a silver polishing cloth, the contrast between silver and niello will deepen over time.
