Description

The same rule applies as with the matching cup: Gold is only applied to what protrudes plastically—here, on the four corner volutes. Because gold does not tarnish and silver darkens, the pattern becomes more prominent over the years instead of fading.

At a Glance

  • Plate for the Eliyahu Cup, made of 925 sterling silver, partially gilded
  • Dimensions approx. 24 × 24 cm — Silver weight approx. 0.73 kg
  • Gilded acanthus volutes at the four corners
  • Chased rim, smooth mirror with rounded corners
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — Manufactory since 1948

When Cup and Plate Follow the Same Rule

With the matching cup, what protrudes plastically is gilded—the freestanding leaf tips, the leaves on the nodus. The same applies to this plate: Gold is on the four corner volutes, the only parts that project from the surface.

That sounds obvious, but it is not. Many sets are gilded arbitrarily—a band here, a surface there—and then the pieces don't match when placed side by side. A consistent rule, on the other hand, creates coherence, even if the cup and plate have very different shapes.

Anyone who places both pieces together will see it: The gold is at the same level of perception.

The Corner Volutes

A volute is a rolled-up spiral—in architecture, the hallmark of Ionic capitals, in silversmithing, a means of handling corners.

Because the corner is the difficult spot for square table silver: Ornament meets ornament there, and where the transition fails, the whole piece appears stunted. A volute solves this by making the corner the motif, instead of hiding it. Gilded, it becomes an eye-catcher.

The Fifth Cup

On Seder night, four cups of wine are on the table, from which one drinks. A fifth is filled but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu. It belongs to the prophet, whose coming announces future redemption; towards the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him.

The plate holds this cup—and catches what overflows when poured to the brim.

Material and Origin

A silver-plated piece could not be produced this way at all—the plating would tear under the hallmark. And it cannot be repolished as often as desired, because the layer gets thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the handcraft during creation and maintenance over generations. The plate carries a hallmark.

Zaramella Argenti has been producing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased—driven into the silver by hand with punches. The gilding then takes place in a second step: All areas that remain silver are covered, only the exposed parts are gilded.

Individually or as a Set

The plate is available individually—for anyone who already owns or inherited the matching cup. And it is offered as a coordinated set with the partially gilded cup from the series.

Engraving

The smooth mirror is largely covered when the cup is placed on it; the back is suitable for a visible dedication. Engraving is not done on the gilded volutes—the gold layer would be damaged there. We will coordinate placement and size with you in advance. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.

Care

Wash by hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. Only wipe the gilded volutes dry: Gold is softer than silver; polishing paste would damage the thin layer. Wipe off wine residues promptly. The darker depth in the chased indentations may remain. Frequently Asked Questions

Which cup does it fit?

It fits the partially gilded cup of approx. 28.5 cm, with which it is listed under one model number. Together, they form the partially gilded set.

Does the gilding wear off?

Not with normal use. The volutes are raised and are only wiped dry during cleaning.

What is a volute?

A rolled-up spiral. In silversmithing, it is used to structure corners instead of letting them end bluntly.

Is it kosher?

We offer silverware and describe its use—we cannot provide religious legal information. Questions about ritual suitability should be directed to your community.

Is it delivered in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.

About the Partially Gilded Cup

This plate belongs to the partially gilded cup of approx. 28.5 cm. Both show the same craftsmanship: the raised parts of the ornament are accented with fine gold, while the recessed parts remain silver. Together, they form the partially gilded set.

In the same shape, but without gold, there is the square plate of approx. 24×24 cm—the manufacturer lists it under the same base number. One size up is the partially gilded plate of approx. 28×28 cm.

Because gold does not tarnish and silver darkens, the pattern becomes more prominent over the years. For a plate that is often on the table, this is an advantage: It ages visibly, but not unpleasantly.
