Material and craftsmanship

The hip flask is made of solid 925 sterling silver, from the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug. The spaniel motif is set in a rectangular panel on the front: the dog in profile, head slightly lowered, with prey in its mouth, behind it cloud shapes and a floral frame of blossoms and leaves. A fine scale or wave pattern completes the scene at the bottom edge of the panel. The motif is executed in a contrasting engraving on the polished silver, so that the drawing and background are clearly distinguished from each other. The back is intentionally left free of ornamentation – it is reserved for individual engraving.
