Material and Craftsmanship

The central ornament of the two cups and the tray's border feature a ring motif – two interlocking rings that, in Slavic tradition, cannot be separated without breaking one. The rings are hand-engraved into the silver in a line relief and filled with niello, a dark silver-sulfur alloy that is fused into the silver surface over an open flame. This fusion makes the niello a permanent part of the silver – the engraving will not peel off and becomes more contrasted with every polish. The cups differ in capacity at 35 ml and 50 ml, which represents the two partners in the bridal couple in Russian wedding tradition. The set features triple gilding: both cups are fully gilded inside with fine gold, the bases are also gilded, and the tray features a fine gold layer on both the rim and in the center. The set is crafted at the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug.

Care

Wash by hand, use lukewarm water, and dry immediately. Do not use a dishwasher, as hot detergent can damage the gilding. Do not use a silver dip bath, as this would remove the fine gold layer. The niello areas remain dark permanently on their own and require no maintenance.
