Description
The edge of this tray is not only chased, but also set with cast parts — separately crafted silver elements that were applied and soldered on. This gives it a depth that could not be achieved by hammering the sheet metal alone. You can feel this more clearly with your hand than you can see it with your eye.
At a glance
- Square serving tray made of 925 sterling silver
- Dimensions approx. 42 × 42 cm — silver weight approx. 1.5 kg
- Chased edge with additional applied cast parts
- Curved arc contour on all four sides
- Large smooth center with heavily rounded corners
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948
Chased and cast — two techniques in one piece
The rim of this tray is created in two stages. First, the tendril work is chased: hammered into the silver by hand using punches, stroke by stroke. Then the cast parts are added — elements cast separately in molds, which are then soldered on.
The reason for this is technical. Chasing deforms sheet metal; beyond a certain height, the material will tear. If you want a deeper relief, you must cast it. Combining both techniques in one piece requires the transitions to be seamless — the solder joints must not be visible, and the casting must continue the language of the chasing.
The difference is visible in the light: Cast parts have sharp edges and deep shadows, while chased parts taper off more softly.
Material and origin
With a piece of this design, the material determines the feasibility: The chased rim could not be produced on a plated base — it would tear during the hammering process. And a tray that is actually used can only withstand polishing if the silver is solid throughout.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. Their signature is the house's richly chased line.
Square — what changes
The square is the organizing shape on a table. It aligns with the edges of the table, it can be placed next to a second square, and it utilizes corners better than a round shape. On a square or rectangular table, it appears calmer than a round tray, which always seems to float a little.
Approx. 42 × 42 cm carries a carafe with six glasses, a coffee service for four, or a selection of pastries. The large, rounded center provides a calm base for everything placed on it.
Engraving
The center is large, flat, and completely free of ornamentation — well-suited for a centered monogram, a coat of arms, or a dedication with a date. The square naturally provides a frame for a centered engraving. Engraving is possible once we have checked the piece. Select the engraving service right away; we clarify size and position together with you after your order, and if engraving is not possible, we refund the flat fee. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Uses
For an aperitif with a carafe and glasses, a coffee service for four, a selection of chocolates after dinner, or breakfast in bed. During a reception, it carries filled glasses; on the table, it remains as a base around which place settings are arranged.
On a sideboard, it becomes a fixed area for a stationary arrangement — a carafe, two glasses, and a candlestick. Silver that is used gains a depth over the years that never develops in a cabinet: the raised areas remain bright because they are touched, while the recesses darken. This exact contrast is what defines old tableware.
Occasions
For weddings, silver anniversaries, or company jubilees. As a gift that bears an engraved dedication in a lasting, visible way without conflicting with the ornamentation.
Care
Clean by hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain in the solder joints of the cast parts. When drying, be sure to include the deep parts of the casting. Tarnish is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the darker tone may remain in the depths, as it highlights the relief. Frequently asked questions
What are the cast parts on the edge?
Separately cast silver elements that are soldered onto the chased rim. They allow for a higher relief than could be hammered from the sheet metal.
Are the applied parts stable?
Yes, they are firmly soldered and part of the piece. When cleaning, however, you should avoid hard brushes.
Solid or silver-plated?
Solid 925 sterling silver, not plated.
Are there other square trays?
Yes — in approx. 45×45 cm with palmettes as well as two versions in approx. 48×48 cm, with a tendril edge and a shell edge.
Is it delivered in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
What sets this tray apart from the others
Most trays in the line are hammered and chased from a single piece. This one additionally features applied cast parts — separately cast silver elements soldered onto the rim. The manufacturer notes this specifically in the catalog: w/ Castings.
The difference is more noticeable to the touch than to the eye: Cast parts stand out further from the base than would be possible through hammering alone. They give the edge a sculptural quality.
Other square formats in the line: approx. 45×45 cm with palmettes, approx. 48×48 cm with a tendril edge, and approx. 48×48 cm with a shell edge. All three are larger than this one and made without applied parts.
