The size for making an entrance

At approx. 53 × 40 cm, this is more than double the surface area of a medium-sized tray. In practical terms, this means: twelve champagne flutes, or a carafe with eight glasses, or a complete coffee service with pot, milk, sugar, six cups, and pastries — all in one trip.

With a dead weight of approx. 1.7 kg, it sits steadily in the hands when carried and will not tip if the weight on it is unevenly distributed. The raised, scalloped rim catches anything that might otherwise go over the edge. It is too large for everyday use for two — for that, the same model is available in approx. 39 × 28 and approx. 47 × 35 cm. This one is made for the occasions you remember.

The rim — chased, not stamped

The flange, or surrounding rim, is chased by hand: driven into the silver punch by punch. You can tell because the scrolls have genuine depth and no two sections are identical. Over this length — a good meter and a half of rim circumference — this represents significant manual labor.

The motif is the acanthus, that jagged leaf from ancient architecture that entered the culture of fine dining via the Italian Renaissance. Small flowers sit between the scrolls, a fine beaded edge runs along the outside, and a curved step leads inward to the surface.

Material and origin

With a piece of this craftsmanship, the material determines feasibility: The chased flange could not be produced on a plated item — it would tear during the hammering process. And a tray that is actually used can only withstand polishing if the silver is solid throughout.

Zaramella Argenti has been crafting in Padua since 1948. Their signature is the house's richly chased line; the wine carafe set from the same line shares the same ornamental language and fits comfortably on this tray with plenty of room to spare.

What it is used for

Wedding champagne receptions, baptism buffets, New Year's Eve, corporate events. Anywhere that multiple glasses are moved at once and the moment is bound to be photographed.

Between these occasions, it rarely stays in the cupboard: on a sideboard, it holds a display of a carafe, glasses, and candlesticks, becoming the quiet focal point of the room. On the dining table, it serves as a base for table decorations.

Hand wash with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth; dry thoroughly afterward. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack the surface, and moisture remains in the recesses. Tarnishing is a reaction with sulfur in the air, not damage — a silver polishing cloth will restore the shine. And it needs a permanent home: a cabinet shelf at least 55 cm wide is recommended, otherwise, it will be permanently on display.
