Material and Workmanship
The relief made of 925 sterling silver depicts a tiger head frontally, with an alert gaze and a base of baroque acanthus scrolls. The stripe pattern of the fur is entirely executed in niello hand engraving: a dark alloy is melted into numerous parallel, hand-engraved lines and chemically-physically bonded with the silver. The calm silver surface of the face contrasts with the dense niello stripes on the cheeks and back of the head, making the tiger stand out plastically from the surface. The relief is mounted on a deep red velvet passe-partout, set in a dark brown wooden frame with a thin golden decorative strip inside.
The piece belongs to the ZODIAC line of the Nielloa collection, which we curate at SilberKosmos — astrological silver artworks in uniform framing, crafted by the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, a Russian center of silversmithing since 1683.
Use and Occasions
The Tiger (虎, hǔ) is the third of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs, its element being Wood in the Yang state. In Chinese folklore, it is considered the king of animals and a powerful protector against evil spirits — many families hang tiger pictures on their front doors to ward off misfortune. Those born in the Year of the Tiger are considered brave, charismatic, and self-confident.
As a gift, the wall hanging is suitable for Chinese New Year, for the milestone birthday of a Tiger-born person, or for the birth of a child in the Year of the Tiger — as the beginning of a personal zodiac gallery that grows with the child. According to Chinese tradition, it is also suitable as a protective symbol for the entrance area. Even independently of Chinese astrology, the tiger as a universal symbol of courage, strength, and leadership is a fitting gift. All 24 motifs of the ZODIAC line share the same framing and can be complemented over the years to form a family gallery.
Engraving and SilberVerse Card
Upon request, we engrave dates, names, or a short dedication on the back or on the frame — popular options include the date of the Spring Festival and the recipient's name or the birth date and parents' names. For an engraving order, we also include a SilberVerse card in 15 × 10 cm format: a digitally designed, unique photo with your desired text — currently free with every engraving.
Care
Occasionally treat the silver surface with a soft polishing cloth — avoid abrasive cleaners and direct water. The niello stripes will even become more contrasting over time as the surrounding silver is polished brighter. The wooden frame does not require special care, but should not be exposed to a constantly humid environment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which years belong to the Chinese Tiger cycle?
Among others, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, and 2034. The exact start of each Tiger year is usually between late January and mid-February, at Chinese New Year or the Spring Festival.
Is the tiger a suitable motif even without a Chinese context?
Yes. Across cultures, the tiger is a symbol of courage, strength, and leadership and is also suitable as a gift for a brave, proactive person, independent of Chinese astrology.
Is niello engraving a coating that can wear off?
No. Niello is not a coating, but a dark alloy that is melted into the engraved lines and firmly bonds with the silver. It does not wear off but gains contrast with each polish.
