Description

The Tiger wall hanging is a handmade silver relief made of 925 sterling silver with intense niello stripes — the Chinese zodiac sign Tiger (虎) as a New Year's gift, a birth gift for those born in the Year of the Tiger, or a protective symbol for the entrance area. ZODIAC line of the Nielloa collection by SevChern.

What do you give for Chinese New Year in the Year of the Tiger — to a friend whose child was born in February 2022? To a business partner with an Asian background who honors their heritage? To a godmother who was born in the Year of the Tiger in 1974 or 1986 and is celebrating a milestone birthday? This wall hanging is made for these moments.

A 925 sterling silver relief with the Chinese zodiac sign Tiger (虎) as the central motif — frontal, majestic, with pronounced niello stripes and an acanthus volute ornament as a heraldic base. The tiger's stripe pattern is entirely executed in niello hand-engraving: dark lines that give the silver plate depth and wildness. Framed in a dark brown wooden frame with a narrow golden trim, on a deep red velvet passe-partout.

A work of art from the ZODIAC line of the Nielloa collection by SevChern — handmade in Veliky Ustyug.

Nielloa ZODIAC — astrological silver artworks in uniform framing.
24 motifs: 12 Western zodiac signs + 12 Chinese zodiac signs.

Gifts for Chinese New Year

Chinese Zodiac Sign Tiger — Courage, Charisma, Protective Instinct

The Tiger (虎, hǔ) is the third of the twelve Chinese zodiac signs — its element is Wood (Yang), and its direction is the Northeast. In Chinese folklore, it is not a wild predator, but the King of Animals and a powerful protector against evil spirits. Many families hang tiger pictures on their front doors to ward off misfortune — a tradition that is centuries old.

Those born in the Year of the Tiger are considered courageous, charismatic, confident, and passionate. They lead where others follow — but they do so not out of a thirst for power, but out of responsibility. A person born in the Year of the Tiger protects, takes risks, and inspires.

Tiger years in the 20th/21st century: 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034. Anyone born within the respective New Year's cycle (usually late January / early February) bears the Tiger sign.

Nielloa — Ink in Silver, Like a Tattoo on the Skin

Nielloa is our brand for the handmade niello artworks from the SevChern manufactory. Niello itself is one of the oldest silversmithing techniques, extremely rare in Europe. Imagine it like ink in silver — or like a tattoo on the skin: the dark mass is not on top, but is melted into the hand-engraved lines and permanently bonded with the metal.

In this Tiger wall hanging, niello is used particularly intensely — because the tiger's stripe pattern requires many parallel dark lines that form the fur pattern. The calm silver surface of the face contrasts with the dense niello strokes on the back of the head, on the cheeks, on the chest. The tiger emerges plastically from the silver surface — a 3D effect created by niello shadows.

Hand Engraving and Master's Signature

With niello hand engraving, each stroke has only one chance. If a line is not right, the master starts over — no software undo button, no adjustment possible. Especially with a stripe-rich motif like the tiger, this requires an enormous amount of concentration: dozens of parallel lines, all at the same angle, all with the same pressure. A single slipped line means: a new piece.

The masters in Veliky Ustyug are trained according to the same principle and produce the same motif, but small differences in line work are like human handwriting: they can be imitated, but the subtle peculiarities remain. These peculiarities are the artist's signature.

The exact recipe of the niello mass and the individual way of working it in an open flame are the personal secret of each master. After melting, polishing follows: not too much removed (otherwise the niello disappears), not too little (otherwise the contrast is missing). Experience that is only in the hands of the masters from Veliky Ustyug — since 1683.

ZODIAC — a line with 24 motifs

The ZODIAC line of the Nielloa collection includes both zodiacs:

  • 12 Chinese zodiac signs — Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig
  • 12 Western zodiac signs — Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces

All pieces share the same framing: dark brown wooden frame, narrow golden trim inside, deep red velvet passe-partout. This makes them a gallery series — several zodiac signs of a family can be hung as a wall group. Parents, children, grandchildren, each with their sign.

For what occasion this wall hanging is made

For Chinese New Year / Spring Festival: The classic New Year's gift in the Year of the Tiger. But also in other years, a fitting present for friends with a close connection to Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, or Japanese culture.

For a milestone birthday of someone born in the Year of the Tiger: Anyone born in the Year of the Tiger in 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, or 2022 receives an astrologically fitting silver artwork for their 40th, 50th, or 60th birthday.

For the birth / baptism of a Tiger child: The last Tiger years were 2010 and 2022 — a heirloom for children of these years that grows with them. First hangs in the nursery, later in their own home.

As a protective symbol for the entrance area or housewarming: According to Chinese tradition, the Tiger wards off evil spirits — it hangs at the entrance, not behind one's back. Ideal housewarming gift with cultural depth.

As a gallery partner to other ZODIAC motifs: Rabbit (partner in the love calendar), Dragon (court couple), Ox and Tiger (colleague pair in the Zodiac cycle).

Engraving on request

On the back or on the frame, we can engrave a date, name, or a short dedication upon request. Popular for New Year's gifts: date of the Spring Festival and name of the recipient. For baby gifts: birth date and parents' names. For engraving orders, we include a free SilberVerse card (10 × 15 cm), individually inscribed with your desired text.

Care

Clean the silver surface with a soft polishing cloth — no abrasive cleaners, no direct water. The niello becomes more contrasting with each polish, as the surrounding silver becomes brighter and the dark stripes stand out more strongly. The dark brown wooden frame remains stable without special care, as long as it is not hung in a damp environment.

Frequently asked questions about the Tiger wall hanging

What does Nielloa mean — is that a typo of Niello?
No. Nielloa is our brand for the handmade niello artworks from the SevChern manufactory. Niello is the technique (dark alloy melted into engraved silver lines), Nielloa is the name of our artwork line. From 2026, we plan to have our own shop for this at niello.de.

Is this real niello or just blackened silver?
Real niello. At SevChern, there is a clear rule: either pure silver hand engraving or genuine niello inlay — never artificial oxidation. In this tiger, the stripes are genuine niello mass, melted in an open flame and permanently bonded with the silver. Hence the 3D relief effect — oxidation would be flat.

Which years are Tiger years in the Chinese calendar?
1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034. The exact start of each Tiger year is usually between late January and mid-February (Chinese New Year / Spring Festival). Anyone born between two cycles should check the exact date.

Is the tiger a good motif even without a Chinese context?
Yes. The tiger is universally a symbol of courage, strength, leadership, and protection — from Indian Hindu belief to European heraldry. Anyone who likes the motif does not have to be connected to Chinese astrology. As a gift for a courageous, strong-willed person, it is suitable regardless of the zodiac sign.

I want to build a complete family gallery — is that possible?
Yes, that's exactly what the ZODIAC line is designed for. All 24 motifs (12 Chinese + 12 Western) have the same framing and the same format. You can start with one piece and add more over the years — for births, birthdays, New Year's festivals. The pieces work individually and as a gallery wall.

Are all Tiger wall hangings identical or unique pieces?
Each piece is hand-engraved and the stripes are melted by hand in an open flame. Especially with the tiger, with its many parallel lines, each master has their own signature — small differences in line density and angle remain. These peculiarities are the artist's signature. Each piece bears the manufactory mark of the executing silversmith.

Is a certificate of authenticity required?
The product itself is the certificate of authenticity. The master's signature in the niello striping, the polished surface, the weight, the 925 silver hallmark, and the manufactory mark — the sum of these features proves the authenticity better than any paper.

Where is the best place to hang the tiger?
According to Chinese tradition, at the entrance — facing the door, so that it wards off evil spirits. In Western homes, it's good in the study (leadership), in the living room (eye-catcher), or in a display cabinet as a collector's item.
