Material and craftsmanship
The 925 sterling silver relief depicts a tiger’s head from the front, with a vigilant gaze and a base of Baroque acanthus scrolls. The striped pattern of the fur is executed entirely in hand-engraved niello: a dark alloy is melted into numerous parallel, hand-engraved lines, forming a chemical and physical bond with the silver. The calm silver surface of the face contrasts with the dense niello stripes on the cheeks and back of the head, allowing the tiger to emerge plastically from the surface. The relief is mounted on a deep red velvet mat board and encased in a dark brown wooden frame with a narrow gold decorative trim inside.
