Material and workmanship

Astra Gold involves several steps: First, the silver is gilded, then the manufacturer applies the floral ornament with fine engraving, and only after that is the niello compound melted into the depressions. Niello – often described as "ink in silver" – is not an applied color, but a sulfur alloy that chemically and physically bonds firmly with the silver. This ensures that the black contrast remains permanently and even gains depth over time with polishing. The floral ornamentation is the same elegant tendril that adorns other pieces in the Astra family – here, however, it appears in a third, particularly festive dimension due to the combination of gold and black.
