Material and workmanship

Several steps go into creating Astra Gold: first, the silver is gold-plated, then the manufacture applies the floral ornament using fine engraving, and only after that is the niello compound melted into the recesses. Niello – often described as "ink in silver" – is not a painted color, but a sulfur alloy that bonds firmly to the silver through a chemical-physical process. This ensures the black contrast is permanent and even gains depth over time with polishing. The floral ornamentation is the same sweeping vine found on other pieces in the Astra family – yet here, through the combination of gold and black, it appears in a third, particularly festive dimension.
