Description
The double-headed eagle with antique patination looks different from its gilded counterpart: The coat of arms is not golden, but is sculpted through blackening in the recesses – dark lines trace each feather, each crown, while the raised surfaces glow silver. The "Antique Patinated Double-Headed Eagle" tea glass holder set uses the same holder body and the same diamond-cut crystal glass as the gilded version, but features the ArgentA-typical blackening instead of partial gilding. It also includes the "Edinstvo" teaspoon, united in a velvet-lined premium case.

Material and workmanship
The podstakannik features the classicist column structure of our coat of arms family: acanthus volutes, laurel wreath with ribbon, stirrup handle with pearl rim. In the central oval medallion sits the Russian double-headed eagle in silver high relief – the two heads, three crowns, scepter and orb, and the smaller shield with Saint George on the chest are sculpturally modeled. The recesses of this relief are antique patinated, while the raised surfaces remain polished; this contrast makes the contours of the coat of arms stand out more clearly than in a purely polished or gilded version. The "Edinstvo" teaspoon bears the same double-headed eagle as a fine embossing on the oval stem crown, but here without blackening – only the holder is patinated. The bowl is highly polished. The "Tschajny" diamond-cut crystal glass with a cut geometric pattern is a replaceable consumable item and can be replaced if necessary. The blackening is a superficial patination and differs technically from niello, the melted sulfur-silver inlay technique typical of the SevChern manufactory.
Use and occasions
Since 1892, podstakanniki have been official inventory of the Russian railway, historically supplied by the factory in Kolchugino. The coat of arms on this holder refers to the state character of this tradition, while the antique patination gives the piece a dignified, aged appearance. This makes the set particularly suitable as a gift for railway workers, their families and descendants, as a Father's Day or grandfather's gift in Russian-German families, as a retirement gift for civil servants, teachers or officers with long professional lives, as well as for collectors of historical Russian symbolism and heraldry lovers. It is also well suited for milestone birthdays or as an heirloom with a connection to one's roots. Those looking for a more representative, festive version will find it in our "Gilded Double-Headed Eagle" set with the same holder body. Engraving and SilberVerse card
The coat of arms medallion on the holder is adorned with the double-headed eagle and is therefore not available for custom engraving. For an engraving-focused set with an empty coat of arms field, we recommend our "The Master" set as an alternative. Upon request, we include a SilberVerse card measuring 15 × 10 cm with every engraving – digitally designed, with a personal dedication, currently at no extra charge.
Care
Clean the holder and spoon only by hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth – never in the dishwasher, never rub off the blackening in the recesses with silver polish. Wipe dry after use and store in the case, which protects against air contact and delays natural tarnishing. If the polished surfaces tarnish more heavily, a soft silver polishing cloth without abrasive grains can be used on the raised areas, never in the blackened recesses. The diamond-cut glass is dishwasher safe on a short gentle cycle, but hand washing keeps it gentler and clearer.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference to the gilded version?
Same holder, same spoon style, same glass, same case – only the surface treatment differs. In the gilded version, the eagle bears gold; here it is in silver high relief with an antique patina in the recesses.
Is the blackening the same as niello?
No. Niello is a sulfur-silver inlay technique, typical for SevChern from Veliky Ustyug, where black mass is melted into engravings. The blackening used here is a superficial patination in the recesses.
Is the set suitable for railway worker gifts?
Yes, it is traditionally intended for exactly that. The Podstakannik has been official inventory of the Russian railway since 1892, manufactured by the same factory in Kolchugino, which now produces as ArgentA.
