Description
The double-headed eagle with antique patina looks different from its gilded counterpart: the coat of arms does not stand out in gold but is brought into relief by darkening the recessed areas—dark lines trace every feather and every crown, while the raised surfaces gleam in silver. The “Antique-Patinated Double-Headed Eagle” tea glass holder set uses the same holder body and the same diamond-cut crystal glass as the gilded version, but features ArgentA’s signature darkening instead of partial gilding. It also includes the “Edinstvo” teaspoon, presented together in a velvet-lined premium case.

Materials and craftsmanship
The podstakannik features the classicist column structure of our coat-of-arms collection: acanthus scrolls, a laurel wreath with ribbon, and a handle with a beaded edge. The central oval medallion bears the Russian double-headed eagle in high-relief silver—the two heads, three crowns, scepter and orb, as well as the smaller shield bearing Saint George on its breast, are sculpted in relief. The recessed areas of this relief have an antique patina, while the raised surfaces remain polished; this contrast makes the contours of the coat of arms stand out more clearly than in a purely polished or gilded finish. The “Edinstvo” teaspoon features the same double-headed eagle in a fine embossed design on the oval finial, but without darkening—the holder alone is patinated. The bowl is highly polished. The “Tschajny” diamond-cut crystal glass, with its geometric cut pattern, is a replaceable consumable item and can be replaced as needed. The darkening is a surface patination and is technically different from niello, the fused sulfur-silver inlay technique typical of the SevChern workshop.
Use and occasions
Since 1892, podstakanniki have been official equipment of the Russian railway, historically supplied by the factory in Kolchugino. The coat of arms on this holder evokes the state character of this tradition, while the antique patina gives the piece a dignified, aged appearance. This makes the set especially suitable as a gift for railway workers, their families and descendants; as a Father’s Day or grandfather’s gift in Russian-German families; as a retirement gift for civil servants, teachers or officers with long careers; and for collectors of historic Russian symbolism and heraldry enthusiasts. It is also well suited to milestone birthdays or as a family heirloom with ancestral significance. For a more prestigious, festive version, see our “Gilded Double-Headed Eagle” set with the same holder body. Discover more pieces in our 925 Silver Tableware Collection.
Engraving and SilberVerse card
The holder’s coat-of-arms medallion already bears the double-headed eagle and is therefore not available for custom engraving; the base of the glass holder and the back of the spoon handle can be engraved. For a set designed around engraving, with a blank coat-of-arms panel, we recommend our “Der Meister” set instead. On request, we can include a 15 × 10 cm SilberVerse card—custom-designed digitally with a personal message, free of charge.
Care
Clean the holder and spoon by hand only, using warm water, mild dish soap and a soft cloth—never put them in the dishwasher, and never rub away the darkening in the recessed areas with silver polish. Wipe dry after use and store in the case to protect against contact with air and delay natural tarnishing. If the polished surfaces tarnish more heavily, use a soft silver-polishing cloth without abrasive particles on the raised areas only, never on the darkened recesses. The diamond-cut glass is dishwasher-safe on a short, gentle cycle, but handwashing is gentler and keeps it clearer.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference compared with the gilded version?
The holder, spoon style, glass and case are the same—the only difference is the surface treatment. In the gilded version, the eagle is gold; here, it is rendered in high-relief silver with an antique patina in the recessed areas.
Is the darkening the same as niello?
No. Niello is a sulfur-silver inlay technique typical of SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, in which a black compound is fused into engravings. The darkening used here is a surface patination in the recessed areas.
Is this set suitable as a gift for railway workers?
Yes, that is precisely its classic purpose. The podstakannik has been official equipment of the Russian railway since 1892 and is made by the same workshop in Kolchugino, which now produces under the ArgentA name.
