Description

In Orthodox families, the Kazan Mother of God is the image that hangs above the cradle. It is this very image that sits at the top of the spoon: Mary with the Child in a medallion, the figures gilded, the background surrounding them in matte silver. Below this runs a handle filled with openwork tendrils. It comes with an Orthodox cross on a loop. Both pieces lie in a hinged case, with a satin ribbon around the handle.

Spoon, cross, cup — ready-assembled in a case, so that nothing is missing on the day of the baptism.

What is in the case

Two pieces with two different life paths. The spoon measures 11.3 centimeters and weighs around 13 grams—short enough for a child's hand, heavy enough to feel substantial. It stays in the house and later moves to the display cabinet. The cross pendant is two centimeters long and weighs one gram; it waits until the child is old enough to wear it. Together, the set weighs about 14 grams of 925 sterling silver.

A chain is deliberately not included—the parents decide on the length and the right time. This same set is also available in an antique blackened version, where the icon is rendered in dark tones rather than gold. Further combinations can be found under Baptism Gift Sets.

The Kazan Mother of God — why this one in particular

The icon of the Mother of God of Kazan is the most widespread Marian icon in Russia. It was found in Kazan in 1579, and over the centuries it became the icon that is given to a person at the beginning of their life: for baptism, for a wedding, or when moving into a new home. In Orthodox families, it is the image that hangs above the cradle—the Mother of God as protection for mother and child.

On the medallion, she shows the icon in the classic pose: Mary in a half-length portrait with the Child at her side, both heads slightly inclined toward each other, with nimbuses around their heads. To the right and left are the Cyrillic abbreviations for "Mother of God." The handle below bears no children's motif, but rather openwork tendrils in the Old Russian ornamental style—the same design language one knows from icon frames.

The set is therefore not fixed to either boys or girls: no pink, no blue. You can find related pieces under Orthodox gifts in 925 silver.

This spoon design is available with three different icons—in addition to this motif, with Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children, and Christ Pantocrator. The spoon body is the same for all; what changes is the medallion on the top of the handle and, with it, the blessing on the back. Those with multiple godchildren can thus choose three matching yet distinct gifts.

Silver with partial gilding

The spoon and cross are crafted from 925 sterling silver. Specifically, the figure of the icon in the medallion is gilded—not the entire piece. This contrast is the actual artistic feat: the golden image emerges from the matte silver background, just as an icon emerges from its frame. Everything else—handle, tendrils, bowl, and cross pendant—remains bright, polished silver.

Polishing is done by hand, using cotton buffs, to a mirror finish and without rhodium plating. This is a conscious decision by the manufacturer: a rhodium layer would delay tarnishing but would also change the warm tone of the silver. Here, you see the silver itself—and can care for it with a polishing cloth without damaging a coating.

For clarification, as it is often confused with Russian silver: this piece has no niello. Niello is a black metal paste that is fused into engraved lines—a completely different technique from Veliky Ustyug. Those seeking this dark look will find it in the Nielloa baptism collection.

The back: Blessing, tendrils, and space for a name

The spoon is also fully designed on the back—you only notice this when you turn it over. On the back of the medallion is a raised blessing in three lines of Cyrillic script: "Пресвятая Богородице, спаси нас" — "Most Holy Mother of God, save us." This is the short, everyday invocation of the Mother of God—the sentence that Orthodox families speak in prayer. Thus, the icon is present in the image on one side and in the words on the other.

The back of the bowl features a border of fine spiral tendrils that frame a mirror-polished center field and converge into a denser tendril motif at the tip of the spoon. A detail that no one sees while eating—and that is there nonetheless. This is exactly how you recognize a piece that was not built just for the first glance.

In between, on the back of the handle below the medallion, the surface is intentionally left smooth and mirror-polished. Here is space for an engraving: a short name, or if written concisely, the baptism date as well. Nothing more fits—the handle tapers downwards. But that is exactly enough for the one line that makes a gift a specific gift.

You can view all three spots without holding the spoon in your hand: in the image gallery above, there is a product video in which the set is turned—first the front with the icon, then the back with the blessing, engraving area, and tendril border. Additionally, the detail panel in the gallery shows these same three spots as close-ups.

Consecrated in Kolchugino

The pieces in this series are consecrated before delivery—by the local Orthodox parish of the Saint Pokrov Church in Kolchugino, Vladimir region, Diocese of Alexandrov of the Moscow Patriarchate. A small certificate to this effect is included in the case.

For Orthodox families, this is often the point that distinguishes a baptism gift from just a pretty spoon.

How to recognize genuine silver

Every piece comes from the factory with a sealed label attached. This shows the manufacturer, the description, the item number, the silver weight, and a unique identification number (UIN). In addition, there is the manufactory's maker's mark, the ArgentA sign, and the quality control stamp.

The hallmark is structured to be readable: the first letter stands for the year of manufacture, the second for the responsible state inspection office, and the others for the workshop. Via the UIN, the piece can additionally be looked up in the state register for precious metals. It sounds technical—but in everyday life, it is exactly what makes the difference between silver and silver-plated provable.

The Orthodox cross

The pendant is small yet fully finished: the ends of the crossbar terminate in a cloverleaf shape, in the middle sits the corpus in relief, and below that, the ornament continues to the foot. The three-leaf ends represent the Trinity in Christian iconography; this form is widespread for Orthodox baptismal crosses. The surface remains brightly polished—no enamel, no gilding. It is the same cross for all sets in this series.

Care: keeping the gold shiny

After use, warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth are sufficient. No dishwasher and no scouring agents—the gilding is a thin layer and cannot withstand scrubbing. Use a silver polishing cloth only on the silver surfaces, not on the gilded medallion. Silver immersion baths are generally not recommended for partially gilded pieces. This is explained in detail in our care instructions for silver.

Frequently asked questions about the baptism set

From what age is the spoon suitable?
As cutlery from the age when the child starts eating solid food. It is usually gifted earlier—at the baptism, or often as early as birth.

Is the whole spoon gilded?
No, only the figure of the icon in the medallion. This very contrast makes the image readable. The handle, bowl, and cross remain bright silver.

Can the spoon be engraved?
Yes—technically, an engraving is possible on this spoon, but it can only be ordered after a check. Both belong together and this is not a restriction of one by the other:

Technically: The back of the handle below the medallion is smooth and mirror-polished—a clear area that is there for exactly that purpose. There is room for a short first name; if written concisely, the baptism date also fits below it. About 20 characters is the guideline, not a firm promise: the handle tapers downwards, so the way it is written also plays a part.

Ordering: The engraving cannot be added directly to the shopping cart in the shop. Write to us briefly before ordering—we will coordinate the text, spelling, and placement and confirm what fits on this piece. That way, we don't promise anything that won't actually fit.

Not engravable are the back of the medallion (the raised blessing is there), the back of the bowl (the tendril border runs there), and the cross pendant (2 cm in size and fully finished on both sides).

Is the set for a girl or a boy?
For both. It manages without colored enamel and is gender-neutral—practical if you are gifting before the birth or do not know the gender.

Is the set also suitable for a Catholic or Protestant baptism?
The style is Orthodox—those who are deliberately looking for this will find exactly that here. But a cross remains a cross, and a silver baptism spoon is a classic in all denominations. For those who would prefer an explanation of the blessing on the back: it is translated in this description.

Does a chain belong with it?
No. The set contains a spoon and pendant; the parents choose the chain later to suit the age.

How else can the set be made personal?
Via a SilberVerse card: a printed card with a verse or dedication that is included with the gift. How that works can be found under About SilberVerse. Cards and engravings can be combined.

Is there a product video?
Yes, in the image gallery above. The set is turned in it and shown up close—front with the icon, back with the blessing, engraving area, and tendril border, plus the cross pendant individually. Those who want to know how the piece feels in the hand and how big it really is will see it there more clearly than in any static image.

What should I look for regarding silver for babies?
925 Sterling Silver has been standard for cutlery for centuries and consists of 92.5% fine silver. The spoon, like any children's cutlery, belongs in supervised hands; the pendant is not for infants due to its size.
