Description
The Kazan Mother of God is the image that hangs above the cradle in Orthodox families. It is precisely this image that sits at the head of the spoon: Mary with the Child in a medallion, the depressions highlighted in dark, and below it a handle full of tendrils. An Orthodox cross is attached to the eyelet. Both pieces lie in a hinged case, with a satin ribbon around the handle.
For the day of the baptism
Baptism gift sets in 925 silver
Spoon, cross, cup — ready-packed in a case, so nothing is missing on the day of the baptism.
View setsWhat is in the case
Two pieces with two different life paths. The spoon measures 11.3 centimeters and weighs around 13 grams — short enough for a child's hand, heavy enough to feel substantial. It stays in the house and later finds its way into the display cabinet. The cross pendant is two centimeters long and weighs one gram; it waits until the child is old enough to wear it. Together, the set weighs approximately 14 grams of 925 silver.
A chain is deliberately not included — the parents decide the length and the right time. The same composition is also available in a partially gold-plated version, where the figure of the icon is finished in gold. Further combinations can be found under Baptism gift sets.
The Kazan Mother of God — why her in particular
The icon of the Mother of God of Kazan is the most widespread Marian icon in Russia. It was found in Kazan in 1579, and over the centuries it became the icon one gives to a person at the beginning of their life: for baptism, for a wedding, when moving into a new home. In Orthodox families, it is the image that hangs above the cradle — the Mother of God as protection for mother and child.
On the medallion, she shows the icon in the classic pose: Mary in a half-portrait with the Child by her side, both heads slightly inclined toward each other, with the nimbus around their heads. To the right and left are the Cyrillic abbreviations for "Mother of God". The handle below does not bear a child's motif, but rather openwork tendrils in Old Russian ornamentation — the same design language known from icon frames.
The set is therefore not assigned to either a boy or a girl: no pink, no blue. You can find related pieces under Orthodox gifts in 925 silver.
This spoon design is available with three different icons — besides this motif, there is the Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children, and Christ Pantocrator. The spoon body is identical for all; the medallion at the head of the handle is what changes, along with the blessing on the back. If you have several godchildren, you can choose three matching yet different gifts.
The antique blackening — and what it is not
The depressions in the icon medallion and between the tendrils are highlighted in dark. This makes the figure and ornamentation stand out three-dimensionally, as light and shadow are no longer absorbed by the polished silver. This is achieved through a surface blackening, with which the manufacturer intentionally lets the piece age in advance.
There are two things you should know about this. First: This is not niello. Niello is a black metal paste that is melted into recessed lines and is firmly bonded to the silver — a completely different technique that originates in Veliky Ustyug. The blackening here lies on the surface. Second, it is not a varnish or a paint, so it cannot peel off, and it also acts as a protective layer against further darkening — the piece will look the same in five years as it does today. The high points can be carefully brightened with a silver polishing cloth without the depressions becoming lighter.
The spoon and cross are made of 925 silver without any additional coating and are polished by hand with cotton buffs to a mirror finish — without rhodium plating. What you see is therefore the silver itself.
The back: blessing, tendrils, and space for a name
The spoon is also well-designed from the back — you only see this when you turn it over. On the back of the medallion is a raised blessing in three lines of Cyrillic script: "Пресвятая Богородице, спаси нас" — "Most Holy Mother of God, save us." This is the short, everyday invocation of the Mother of God — the phrase that Orthodox families speak in prayer. Thus, the icon is present in image on one side and in word on the other.
The back of the bowl features a surrounding border of fine spiral tendrils that frames a mirror-polished center field and converges into a denser tendril motif at the tip of the spoon. A detail that no one sees while eating — and yet it is there. That is exactly how you recognize a piece that was not built at first glance.
In between, on the back of the handle below the medallion, the surface intentionally remains smooth and mirror-polished. There is space here for an engraving: a short name, or if the writing is compact, the baptism date as well. Nothing more will fit — the handle tapers towards the bottom. But exactly that is enough for the one line that makes a gift a specific gift.
You can view all three areas without holding the spoon: in the image gallery above there is a product video in which the set is turned — first the front with the icon, then the back with the blessing, engraving surface, and tendril border. Additionally, the detail panel in the gallery shows the same three areas as close-ups.
Consecrated in Kolchugino
The pieces in this series are consecrated before delivery — by the local Orthodox parish of the Holy Protection Church in Kolchugino, Vladimir Region, Eparchy of Alexandrov of the Moscow Patriarchate. A small certificate for this is included in the case.
For Orthodox families, this is often the point that distinguishes a baptism gift from a pretty spoon.
How you recognize genuine silver
Every piece comes with a factory-sealed tag. It contains the manufacturer, designation, article number, silver weight, and a unique identification number (UIN). Added to this are the hallmark of the manufacturer, the mark of ArgentA, and the quality control stamp.
The hallmark is structured legibly: the first letter stands for the year of manufacture, the second for the responsible state assay office, and the others for the company. Using the UIN, the piece can additionally be looked up in the state register for precious metals. It sounds technical — but in everyday life, it is exactly what makes the difference between silver and silver-plated provable.
The Orthodox cross
The pendant is small yet fully crafted: the ends of the crossbar taper into a cloverleaf shape, in the center sits the corpus in relief, and below it the ornament continues to the foot. The three-leaf ends represent the Trinity in Christian iconography; this form is widespread for Orthodox baptismal crosses. The surface remains brightly polished — without enamel, without gold plating. It is the same cross for all sets in this series.
Care: so that the design remains preserved
After use, warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth are sufficient. No dishwasher, no scouring agents, and above all no silver dip bath — such a bath would dissolve the dark depressions and take away exactly what defines the piece. A silver polishing cloth on the high points is completely sufficient. This is explained in detail in our care instructions for silver.
Frequently asked questions about the baptism set
From what age is the spoon suitable?
As cutlery from the age of starting solid food. It is usually given as a gift earlier — at baptism, often even at birth.
Does the blackening come off when washing?
No. The blackening is not paint or varnish, but a surface treatment of the silver. Warm water and dish soap will not harm it. Only silver dip baths are taboo.
Can the spoon be engraved?
Yes — technically an engraving is possible on this spoon, but it can only be ordered after inspection. Both belong together and one is not a restriction of the other:
Technically: The back of the handle below the medallion is smooth and mirror-polished — an empty surface intended exactly for this. There is space for a short first name; with compact writing, the baptism date also fits below it. About 20 characters is a guideline, not a firm promise: the handle tapers downwards, so the writing style plays a role.
Ordering: In the shop, the engraving cannot be added directly to the shopping cart. Send us a quick message before ordering — we will coordinate the text, writing style, and placement and confirm what fits on this piece. That way, we do not promise anything that will not fit in the end.
Not engravable are the back of the medallion (where the raised blessing is), the back of the bowl (where the tendril border runs), and the cross pendant (2 cm in size and crafted on both sides).
Is the set for a girl or a boy?
For both. It manages without colored enamel and is gender-neutral — practical if you are giving a gift before birth or do not know the gender.
Is the set also suitable for a Catholic or Protestant baptism?
The style is Orthodox-influenced — those who deliberately seek this will find exactly that here. But a cross remains a cross, and a silver baptism spoon is a classic in all denominations. For those who would prefer to have the blessing on the back explained: it is translated in this description.
Is a chain included?
No. The set contains the spoon and pendant; the parents can choose a chain later that fits the age.
How else can the set be made personal?
Via a SilberVerse card: a printed card with a verse or dedication that is enclosed with the gift. How that works is explained under About SilberVerse. The card and engraving can be combined.
Is there a product video?
Yes, in the image gallery above. The set is turned in it and shown up close — front with the icon, back with the blessing, engraving surface, and tendril border, plus the cross pendant individually. If you want to know how the piece looks in the hand and how big it really is, you can see it there more clearly than in any static image.
What should I look for regarding silver for a baby?
925 sterling silver consists of 92.5% fine silver and has been standard for cutlery for centuries. Like all children's cutlery, the spoon belongs in supervised hands; because of its size, the pendant is not for infants.
