Description
Christ Pantocrator is the central icon of Orthodoxy — the Almighty, with his right hand raised in blessing and the Gospel book in his left. He sits right here at the top of the spoon, the recesses darkened, followed by a handle full of vines. It comes with an Orthodox cross on the eyelet. Both pieces lie in a hinged case, a satin ribbon around the handle.
For the day of the baptism
Baptism gift sets in 925 silver
Spoon, cross, cup — ready assembled in the case, so nothing is missing on the day of the baptism.
View setsWhat is in the case
Two pieces with two different life paths. The spoon measures 11.3 centimeters and weighs about 14 grams — short enough for a child's hand, heavy enough to feel substantial. It stays in the house and later moves to the display case. The cross pendant is two centimeters long and weighs one gram; it waits until the child is old enough to wear it. Together, the set weighs about 15 grams of 925 silver.
A chain is deliberately not included — parents decide on the length and the right time. This same set is also available in a partially gold-plated version, where the figure of the icon is gilded. Further combinations can be found under baptism gift sets.
Christ Pantocrator — the icon with which everything begins
"Вседержитель," the Almighty, is the central icon of Orthodoxy. It shows Christ in a bust portrait: the right hand raised in blessing, the Gospel book in the left, and the cruciform halo around the head. In every Orthodox church, this image looks down from the dome; in the icon corner of a home, it usually takes pride of place. Those who place a child under this blessing are not choosing just one saint among many, but the image to which all others point back.
On the medallion, to the right and left, are the Cyrillic abbreviations ІС ХС for "Jesus Christ" — the spelling customary on icons since Byzantine times. The handle below features openwork vines in an Old Russian ornamental style, framed towards the end of the handle by narrow crossbars; the same design language found in icon frames.
The set is therefore not defined for either boys or girls: no pink, no blue. You can find related pieces under Orthodox gifts in 925 silver.
This spoon design is available with three different icons — in addition to this motif, there is the Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children, and the Kazan Mother of God. The spoon body is the same for all of them; what changes is the medallion at the handle top, along with the blessing on the back. For those with several godchildren, this allows for choosing three coordinated yet distinct gifts.
Antique blackening — and what it is not
The recesses in the icon medallion and between the vines are highlighted in dark tones. This allows the figure and ornament to stand out in relief, as light and shadow are no longer absorbed by the polished silver. This is achieved through a surface blackening, with which the manufacture deliberately ages the piece beforehand.
There are two things you should know about this. First: This is not niello. Niello is a black metal paste that is melted into recessed lines and is firmly bonded to the silver — a completely different technique, native to Veliky Ustyug. The blackening here lies on the surface. Second, it is neither varnish nor paint, so it cannot flake off, and at the same time acts as a protective layer against further tarnishing — the piece will look the same in five years as it does today. The high points can be carefully brightened with a silver polishing cloth without the recesses becoming lighter.
The spoon and cross are made of 925 silver without any additional coating and are polished by hand with cotton buffs to a mirror finish — without rhodium plating. What you see is therefore the silver itself.
The reverse side: blessing, vines, and space for a name
The spoon is also fully designed on the back — you only see this when you turn it over. On the back of the medallion is a raised blessing in five lines of Cyrillic script: "Господи Иисусе Христе, Сыне Божий, помилуй мя" — "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." This is the Jesus Prayer — the best-known sentence of Orthodox devotion, silently repeated for centuries. Thus, the icon stands as an image on one side and as a word on the other.
The back of the bowl features a surrounding border of fine spiral vines, which frames a mirror-polished center and converges into a denser vine motif at the tip of the spoon. A detail that no one sees while eating — and yet it is there. That is exactly how you recognize a piece that was not built to be looked at only at first glance.
In between, on the back of the handle below the medallion, the surface is deliberately left smooth and mirror-polished. After verification, there is space here for an engraving: a short name, or if the lettering is concise, the baptism date as well. Not more fits — the handle tapers downwards. But that is exactly enough for the one line that turns a gift into a specific, personal gift.
Consecrated in Kolchugino
The pieces in this series are consecrated before delivery — by the local Orthodox parish of the Saint Pokrov Church in Kolchugino, Vladimir region, Alexandrov Eparchy of the Moscow Patriarchate. A small certificate of this is included in the case.
For Orthodox families, this is often the point at which a baptism gift distinguishes itself from a pretty spoon.
How to recognize genuine silver
A sealed label is attached to every piece at the factory. It states the manufacturer, the description, the item number, the silver weight, and a unique identification number (UIN). In addition, there is the manufacturer's hallmark and the ArgentA mark.
The Orthodox cross
The pendant is small and yet fully detailed: the ends of the crossbar terminate in a cloverleaf shape, in the center is the corpus in relief, and below this, the ornament continues to the base. In Christian iconography, the trefoil ends represent the Trinity; this form is widely used for Orthodox baptismal crosses. The surface remains brightly polished — without enamel, without gold plating. It is the same cross for all sets in this series.
Care: to keep the design preserved
After use, warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth are sufficient. No dishwasher, no scouring agents, and above all no silver dip — such a dip would dissolve the dark recesses and take away exactly what makes the piece what it is. A silver polishing cloth on the high points is perfectly sufficient. Detailed information can be found in our care instructions for silver.
Frequently asked questions about the baptism set
From what age is the spoon suitable?
As cutlery from the age of solid food. It is usually gifted earlier — for the baptism, often already for birth.
Does the blackening come off when washing?
No. The blackening is not paint or varnish, but a surface treatment of the silver. Warm water and detergent do not harm it. Only silver dips are taboo.
Can the spoon be engraved?
Yes — technically, an engraving is possible on this spoon, but it can only be ordered after consultation.
Is the set for a girl or a boy?
For both. It comes without colored enamel and is gender-neutral — practical if you are gifting before birth or do not know the gender.
Is the set also suitable for a Catholic or Protestant baptism?
The design is Orthodox in character — those who are consciously looking for this will find exactly that here. But a cross remains a cross, and a silver baptism spoon is a classic in all denominations.
Is a chain included?
No. The set contains the spoon and pendant; the parents will choose a chain later to suit the age.
