Description
Christ Pantocrator is the central icon of Orthodoxy — the Almighty, with his right hand raised in blessing and the Gospel book in his left. This very figure sits at the top of the spoon, gilded on a matte silver background. Below it runs a handle filled with openwork scrollwork. An Orthodox cross is attached to the eyelet. Both pieces come in a hinged presentation case, with a satin ribbon around the handle.
For the day of baptism
Baptismal gift sets in 925 silver
Spoon, cross, cup — fully assembled in a case so that nothing is missing on the day of the baptism.

Two pieces with two different journeys ahead. The spoon measures 11.3 centimeters and weighs around 14 grams — short enough for a child's hand, heavy enough to feel substantial. It stays in the home and later moves into the display cabinet. The cross pendant is two centimeters long and weighs one gram; it waits until the child is old enough to wear it. Together, the set weighs approximately 15 grams of 925 silver.
A chain is intentionally not included — parents decide on the length and timing. The same collection is also available in an antique blackened version, where the icon is rendered in dark tones instead of gold. Further combinations can be found under Baptismal gift sets.
Christ Pantocrator — the icon where everything begins
"Вседержитель" (Vsederzhitel), the Almighty, is the central icon of Orthodoxy. It shows Christ in a bust portrait: the right hand raised in blessing, the Gospel book in the left, the cross-nimbus around the head. In every Orthodox church, this image looks down from the dome; in the icon corner of a home, it usually takes pride of place. Those who place a child under this blessing are not choosing one saint among many, but the image to which all others refer.
On the medallion, the Cyrillic abbreviations ІС ХС for "Jesus Christ" appear on the right and left — the spelling common on icons since the Byzantine era. The handle below features openwork scrollwork in traditional Russian ornamentation, framed towards the end of the stem by narrow crossbars; the same design language found in icon frames.
The set is therefore not restricted to boys or girls: no pink, no blue. You can find related pieces under Orthodox gifts in 925 silver.
This spoon design is available with three different icons — alongside this motif, there is the Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children, and the Kazan Mother of God. The spoon body is identical for all; the medallion on the handle head is swapped, along with the blessing on the reverse side. If you have multiple godchildren, you can choose three cohesive yet distinct gifts.
Silver with partial gilding
The spoon and cross are made of 925 sterling silver. The figure of the icon in the medallion is selectively gilded — not the entire piece. This contrast is the true artistic masterstroke: the golden image emerges from the matte silver background just as an icon emerges from its frame. Everything else — handle, scrollwork, bowl, and cross pendant — remains bright, polished silver.
Polishing is done by hand, using cotton buffers, to a mirror finish and without rhodium plating. This is a deliberate decision by the manufactory: a rhodium layer would delay tarnishing but would also alter the warm tone of the silver. Here, you see the silver itself — and you can care for it with a polishing cloth without damaging a coating.
For clarification, as it is often confused with Russian silver: this piece contains no niello. Niello is a black metal paste fused into engraved lines — an entirely different technique from Veliky Ustyug. If you are looking for that dark appearance, you will find it in the Nielloa baptismal collection.
The reverse side: blessing, scrollwork, and space for a name
The spoon is also designed on the back — you only notice this when you turn it over. On the reverse of the medallion, there is a raised blessing in five lines of Cyrillic script: "Господи Иисусе Христе, Сыне Божий, помилуй мя" — "Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me." This is the Jesus Prayer — the best-known phrase of Orthodox devotion, repeated silently for centuries. Thus, the icon is present in image on one side and in word on the other.
The back of the bowl features a surrounding border of fine spiral scrollwork that frames a mirror-polished center field and converges into a denser motif at the tip of the spoon. A detail that no one sees while eating — yet it is there. That is exactly how you recognize a piece that was not crafted for the first glance alone.
In between, on the reverse of the handle below the medallion, the surface is intentionally kept smooth and mirror-polished. Here is space for an engraving: a short name, or with concise lettering, the baptismal date as well. Nothing more fits — the handle tapers downwards. But that is exactly enough for the one line that turns a gift into a specific gift.
You can see all three spots without holding the spoon: in the image gallery above, there is a product video in which the set is turned — first the front with the icon, then the back with the blessing, engraving surface, and scrollwork border. Additionally, the detail panel in the gallery shows these same three spots in close-up.
Consecrated in Kolchugino
The pieces in this series are consecrated before delivery — by the local Orthodox parish of the Holy Protection (Svyato-Pokrovsky) Church in Kolchugino, Vladimir region, Alexandrov Eparchy of the Moscow Patriarchate. A small certificate confirming this is included in the case.
For Orthodox families, this is often the point where a baptismal gift distinguishes itself from a pretty spoon.
How to recognize real silver
A sealed tag is attached to every piece at the factory. It lists the manufacturer, the designation, the item number, the silver weight, and a unique identification number (UIN). In addition, there is the manufacturer's hallmark, the ArgentA mark, and the quality control stamp.
The hallmark is structured to be readable: the first letter stands for the year of manufacture, the second for the responsible state testing office, and the others for the workshop. Via the UIN, the piece can also be checked in the state register for precious metals. It sounds technical — but in everyday life, it is exactly what makes the difference between silver and silver-plated verifiable.
The Orthodox cross
The pendant is small yet fully crafted: the ends of the bars terminate in a cloverleaf shape, in the center sits the corpus in relief, and below, the ornamentation continues to the foot. In Christian iconography, the trefoil ends represent the Trinity; this shape is widespread in Orthodox baptismal crosses. The surface remains brightly polished — no enamel, no gilding. It is the same cross for all sets in this series.
Care: keeping the gold’s luster
After use, warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth are sufficient. No dishwasher and no abrasive cleaners — the gilding is a thin layer and cannot withstand scrubbing. Use a silver polishing cloth only on the silver surfaces, not on the gilded medallion. Silver dip baths are generally not recommended for partially gilded pieces. This is explained in detail in our care instructions for silver.
Frequently asked questions about the baptismal set
At what age is the spoon suitable?
As cutlery from the age of starting solid food. It is usually gifted earlier — for the baptism, often even at birth.
Is the entire spoon gilded?
No, only the figure of the icon in the medallion. This specific contrast is what makes the image readable. The handle, bowl, and cross remain bright silver.
Can the spoon be engraved?
Yes — technically, engraving is possible for this spoon, but it is only performed after inspection. Both go together and are not a restriction of one by the other:
Technically: The back of the handle below the medallion is smooth and mirror-polished — a free space specifically intended for this. There is room for a short first name; with concise lettering, the baptismal date can also fit below. About 20 characters is a guideline, not a firm promise: the handle tapers downwards, so the lettering style is a deciding factor.
Ordering process: In the shop, you cannot add the engraving directly to the shopping cart. Send us a quick message before ordering — we will agree on the text, spelling, and placement and confirm what will fit on this piece. That way, we don’t promise anything that won't fit in the end.
Not engravable are the reverse of the medallion (the raised blessing is there), the back of the bowl (the scrollwork border runs there), and the cross pendant (2 cm in size and crafted on both sides).
Is the set for a girl or a boy?
For both. It is made without colored enamel and is gender-neutral — practical if you are gifting before the birth or do not know the gender.
Is the set suitable for a Catholic or Protestant baptism?
The design is Orthodox in style — those specifically looking for this will find exactly that here. However, a cross remains a cross, and a silver baptismal spoon is a classic in all denominations. For those who prefer to have the blessing on the back explained: it is translated in this description.
Is a chain included?
No. The set includes a spoon and pendant; parents choose the chain later to suit the child's age.
How else can the set be personalized?
Via a SilberVerse card: a printed card with a verse or dedication that accompanies the gift. How that works is explained under About SilberVerse. The card and engraving can be combined.
Is there a product video?
Yes, in the image gallery above. The set is turned and shown up close — front with the icon, back with the blessing, engraving area, and scrollwork border, plus the cross pendant individually. If you want to know how the piece feels in the hand and how big it actually is, it is clearer there than in any still image.
What should I look for in silver for a baby?
925 sterling silver consists of 92.5% fine silver and has been standard for cutlery for centuries. Like all children's cutlery, the spoon belongs in supervised hands; the pendant is not suitable for infants due to its size.
