This cup showcases two techniques in one piece: the gilding that bathes the interior, upper rim, handle, and foot in warm gold, and the niello inlay that sits exactly in between as a dark floral band — flower rosettes and vines, hand-engraved and filled with a black silver alloy. Niello is neither lacquer nor paint, but a metallurgical compound that is fired at high heat and bonds permanently with the silver. The contrast between shimmering gold and velvety black gives the cup its distinctive character: the ornament does not fade; it actually gains contrast over time.
