Material and craftsmanship

The shape of the cup is flat and wide – a proportion from the Russian tea tradition, where the drink cools evenly and the aroma remains open. The body is completely covered with the ornamental band of the Souverän collection: acanthus vines in molten niello black, the double-headed eagle medallion in the center, gold-plated and clearly engraved. What is gilded – handle, upper rim, medallion background – sets warm gold against the niello black; what remains polished silver gives space to the triad. Niello is neither enamel nor lacquer, but a black inlay that is fused into the engraved lines, ground flush, and polished – like ink in silver. The black is permanently set in the metal – not applied, not peeling.
