The motif sits in an oval medallion on the belly of the carafe: a capercaillie in a courtship pose, tail fanned out, chest puffed up, enclosed by floral niello tendrils of volutes and foliage. A narrow niello frieze runs all around the shoulder at the top and the base at the bottom. Among hunters, the capercaillie is considered a bird hunting motif — an animal that forgets all caution during courtship and has therefore always been seen as a symbol of passion and devotion.

Material and craftsmanship

The carafe is made of solid 925 sterling silver. Niello is an inlay technique: the motifs are engraved into the silver surface. Niello is a black inlay that is melted into the engraved lines, ground flush, and polished — like ink in silver. No coating, no paint, nothing that can peel off. The black is permanently set in the silver and forms a contrast that becomes even sharper over time with polishing. SevChern in Veliky Ustyug crafts each piece in several steps, from the engraving to the high-gloss polish.

The form is classically proportioned: a bulbous body, a narrow shoulder, and a tighter neck with a silver stopper shaped like a small goblet. A round pedestal base gives the carafe stability — it stands on the table like a trophy, not a bottle. The stopper features a cork seal that provides a reliable closure.

Use and occasions

600 ml is enough for a bottle of wine, half a liter of cognac, or six glasses for a hunting gathering. 925 sterling silver does not impart any taste to the drink — suitable for water, wine, whiskey, cognac, or liqueur. Prolonged storage is not recommended for fruit juices with a high acid content.

Care

Hand wash with lukewarm water and mild dish soap; no dishwasher. The niello ornament is permanently fused into the silver and is easy to maintain. A soft silver polishing cloth is sufficient for the polished silver surfaces. Store in a dry place, away from light. The silver stopper should be left slightly loosened during long-term storage to allow air to circulate.
