The motif is set in an oval medallion on the belly of the carafe: a capercaillie in a mating pose, tail fanned, chest puffed out, surrounded by floral niello tendrils of volutes and foliage. A narrow niello frieze runs around the top of the shoulder and the bottom of the foot. The capercaillie is considered among hunters as a motif for bird hunting — an animal that forgets all caution when mating and has therefore always been a symbol of passion and devotion.

Material and Workmanship

The carafe is made of solid 925 sterling silver. Niello is an inlay technique: motifs are engraved into the silver surface, then an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur is melted into the indentations. This mass chemically bonds with the metal — no coating, no paint, nothing that can flake off. The black is permanently set in the silver and creates a contrast that becomes even sharper with polishing over time. SevChern in Veliky Ustyug crafts each piece in several steps from engraving to high-gloss polishing. The hallmark on the base confirms the silver fineness and its origin from the manufactory.

The shape is classically proportioned: a bulbous body, a narrow shoulder, a narrower mouth with a silver stopper that is shaped like a small goblet. A round pedestal gives the carafe stability — it stands on the table like a goblet, not like a bottle. The stopper has a cork seal that reliably closes it.

Use and Occasions

600 ml is enough for a bottle of wine, for half a liter of cognac or for six glasses for a hunting round. 925 sterling silver is food-safe and does not impart any taste to the drink — suitable for water, wine, whisky, cognac or liqueur. Long storage is not recommended for fruit juices with a high acid content.

Care

Rinse by hand with lukewarm water, no dishwasher. The niello ornament is permanently fused into the silver and easy to care for. A soft silver polishing cloth is sufficient for the polished silver surfaces. Store dry and protected from light. The silver stopper should remain slightly loosened during longer storage to allow air circulation.
