The motif on this silver decanter is clear and grand: a capercaillie in mating pose, tail fanned, chest puffed out, head raised. The animal sits in an oval medallion, enclosed by floral niello tendrils — volutes, foliage, fine lines that refract the light. The ornamental band is repeated on the opposite side of the decanter. A narrow niello frieze runs around the top shoulder and bottom base. The black of the niello ink stands in sharp contrast to the polished 925 silver — a contrast that comes alive as the decanter is turned.
