Around the lower belly of the decanter runs a frieze of stylized blossoms in oval cartouches, connected by sweeping tendrils — classic ornamentation from the Russian goldsmithing tradition of SevChern in Veliky Ustyug. In the niello relief process, the motif is engraved directly into the silver, the engraved depressions are created by goldsmith work. Afterwards, a black niello compound is inlaid and chemically-physically bonded to the silver — no paint, no lacquer, no coating that could peel off.

Material and craftsmanship

The niello is part of the silver, not just on it. Step by step, the lines are driven into the metal, then the niello compound is inlaid. When the decanter is polished later, the contrast deepens: the silver shines brighter, the niello remains dark. The play of light and shadow is essential to this decanter — when light falls on the curved surface, the raised parts glow, while the engraved depressions remain in shadow. Depending on the light and viewing angle, the decanter presents a different face.

Use and occasions
