Description
Old cups rarely still have their plate — it got lost over the generations. This one fills the gap: its diameter accommodates the bases of most Eliyahu cups in this line, including inherited pieces. A chased ring runs between the smooth outer edge and the smooth mirror.
At a Glance
- Plate for the Eliyahu cup made of 925 sterling silver
- Diameter approx. 25 cm — silver weight approx. 0.35 kg
- Chased ring between a smooth rim and a smooth mirror
- Matched to the cups of the 04558 series
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacturer since 1948
The Right Proportion
Cup and plate must match — and not just so that the base fits. A plate that is too small makes the cup overhang and looks squat. One that is too large turns the cup into a detail on a surface.
As a rule of thumb in silversmithing, a ratio of around four to five applies: the plate diameter is just below the cup height. With a plate of approx. 25 cm and a cup of approx. 28 cm, this holds true — the cup stands visibly above its base, without overwhelming it.
Therefore, anyone buying both parts separately should not only check the base width but also this ratio.
What a Plate is For
The cup of Elijah is filled to the brim at the Seder — fuller than one would normally pour a glass. What overflows is caught by the plate.
And it gives the cup its own space on a table that is full: symbolic foods, glasses for everyone, candles, the Haggadah at each place. Without a plate, the cup stands amidst everything else; with a plate, it stands on its own.
The Fifth Cup
On Seder night, four cups of wine are on the table, from which one drinks — for the four promises of liberation from the Exodus story. A fifth is filled but not drunk: the Kos shel Eliyahu.
It belongs to the prophet Eliyahu, whose coming announces the future redemption. Towards the end of the evening, the front door is opened to welcome him — in many families, a child goes to open it.
Material and Origin
A silver-plated piece could not be produced this way — the plating would tear under the punch. And it cannot be polished endlessly, because the layer gets thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the handcraft during creation and the care over generations. The plate carries a hallmark.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased: hammered into the silver by hand with punches, stroke by stroke.
Individually or as a Set
Eliyahu cups are passed down through generations; the plate is often missing. A separately available plate complements an inherited piece without replacing it.
Those starting new can also find a cup and plate in this line as a coordinated set — then the dimensions, ornament, and polish match from the outset.
Engraving
The smooth outer rim remains visible even when the cup is placed. A name, a date, or a Hebrew line can be placed there. We advise you in advance on line spacing and size. On request, we include a SilberVerse card , 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Care
Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver. Wipe off wine residue promptly. Tarnishing is reversible with a silver cloth; in the depressions of the ring, the darker depth can remain, it makes the ornament three-dimensional. Frequently Asked Questions
Which cup does it fit?
The corresponding cup of this model number is not in our assortment. In diameter, the cup with approx. 25 cm and the chased cup with approx. 28 cm fit. A naturally coordinated pair is the Eliyahu set.
Does an inherited cup also fit on it?
Generally, yes. Measure the foot diameter and contact us — we will gladly compare the measurements in advance.
Can I use the plate for other purposes?
Yes. It holds pastries or fruit and serves as a tray.
Is it kosher?
We sell silver items and describe their use — we cannot provide religious legal information. Questions about ritual suitability should be answered by your community.
Is it delivered in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
A Plate for Multiple Cups
This plate comes from the chased Signature series. The cup for which it was originally designed is currently not in our assortment — which doesn't make it worse, but freer: with approx. 25 cm, it accommodates the bases of most Eliyahu cups in this line.
It pairs well with the cup with approx. 25 cm and the chased cup with approx. 28 cm. If you want a coordinated pair from the same production, you should choose the Eliyahu set instead.
And for an inherited piece, it is in any case the right choice: old cups rarely have a plate, because it was lost over the decades. A plate from current production fills this gap without the heirloom having to be replaced.
Between festivities, a flat silver plate is the most uncomplicated piece: it lies on a dresser, holds keys or small items, or stands upright on a shelf. Unlike a tall cup, it doesn't need its own space — you can always find one.
