Description

Why a plate under the cup? At Kiddush, the cup is filled to the brim — in some traditions, intentionally so full that it overflows. The plate catches this. It is therefore not merely a decorative piece, but the answer to a practical question. Additionally, it highlights the cup by setting it apart from the rest of the table setting.

At a glance

  • Kiddush plate made of 925 sterling silver
  • Diameter approx. 17 cm — silver weight approx. 0.2 kg
  • Wide rim, hand-chased
  • Smooth, ornament-free center
  • Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948

Why a plate under the cup

At Kiddush, the cup is filled to the brim — fuller than one would normally fill a glass. This is intentional: the abundance represents blessings overflowing. Practically speaking, this means that some wine will spill when lifting or setting down the cup.

That is exactly what the plate is for. It catches the overflow and protects tablecloths and wood. At the same time, it visually highlights the cup: on a set table with dishes, candles, and bread, the Kiddush cup might otherwise get lost among the rest — on its own plate, it is given a stage.

For this reason, the cups and plates in this line are sold both individually and as a set. Those who already possess a cup — often an heirloom — only need to add the plate.

Rim and center

The plate consists of two sections: the rim, the border surrounding it, and the center, the surface in the middle. Here, the rim bears the entire ornament, while the center remains smooth.

This has a functional reason: the cup sits on the center. A chased surface underneath would cause the cup to wobble, and wine residue could not be removed from the indentations without leaving a trace. The smooth surface is the practical solution — and the more beautiful one, as the cup stands on it as if on a mirror.

The rim is hand-chased: hammered into the silver with punches. No section is exactly identical to the previous one — this is how you recognize handcraft versus machine stamping.

Material and origin

A silver-plated piece could not be made this way — the plating would tear under the punch. Nor could it be polished repeatedly, as the layer would become thinner. Solid silver withstands both: the handcrafting during creation and the care over generations.

Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The Signature line represents the richly chased hallmark of the house.

Also without a cup

A plate of this size is not limited to a single use. It can hold pastries with coffee, chocolates after a meal, or a candle in the center of the table. On a dresser, it serves as a tray for keys and rings.

Those who purchase it for Kiddush will therefore find themselves using it more than once a week.

Engraving

The smooth center is an excellent surface for engraving — provided no cup is placed on it. For a plate intended as a gift that is meant to stand on its own, a centered dedication is ideal. However, if a cup will be placed on it, it is better to engrave the back. We will coordinate this with you in advance. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.

As a gift

For a wedding, a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, or a housewarming. A Kiddush plate is also the perfect gift for someone who has already inherited a cup — it complements without replacing.

Care

Clean by hand with warm water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. Do not use a dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver, and moisture would remain in the chased grooves of the rim. Wipe away wine residue promptly. Tarnishing is normal and reversible with a silver cloth; the deeper, darker areas in the patterns may remain. More in the guide on the care of silver cutlery and tableware.

Frequently asked questions

Does every Kiddush cup fit on it?

With a diameter of approx. 17 cm, a standard Kiddush cup with or without a base fits comfortably. If you have a cup with a very wide base, please contact us so we can check the dimensions.

Can I serve food on it?

Yes. Clean by hand promptly after serving acidic foods.

Are the cup and plate available as a set?

The manufacture does not offer a pre-packaged set for this combination. The corresponding cup is the Kiddush cup approx. 10 cm; as a ready-made set, there is the Kiddush set with the footed cup.

Is it delivered in gift packaging?

Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacture.

The cup for which it was made

This plate belongs to the Kiddush cup approx. 10 cm — both are listed by the manufacture under the same model number. With a diameter of approx. 17 cm, it also accommodates the other Kiddush cups in the line, such as the footed cup.

Why a plate under the cup? At Kiddush, the cup is filled to the brim — in some traditions, intentionally so full that it overflows. The plate catches this. It is therefore not a decorative piece, but an answer to a practical question.

Round and flat, without inscription: as a pure form, it is also a small serving platter for pastries or sweets. Those who prefer the square variant can find it in the plate approx. 16×16 cm.
