Description
The square shape is the rarer version for Kiddush plates — and it has an advantage that one only notices when setting the table: A square can be aligned with the table edge or place setting, whereas a round plate cannot. In the center is a round depression where the cup finds its secure place.
At a glance
- Kiddush plate made of 925 sterling silver
- Dimensions approx. 16 × 16 cm — silver weight approx. 0.41 kg
- Round depression as a cup stand
- Partially gold-plated leaf motifs on the four sides
- Dark patinated background, chased tendrils
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — manufacture since 1948
Why square with a round well
The shape meets two requirements simultaneously. The round depression accommodates the base of the cup — it stands firmly, does not slide, and does not tip over even when the plate is lifted. And it catches whatever overflows when pouring to the brim.
The square around the outside gives the whole piece a frame that holds its own on a set table. A round plate would disappear among round tableware; a square aligns itself with table edges and stands out.
During Kiddush, the cup is deliberately filled to the brim — the abundance represents blessings in excess. The plate is therefore not an accessory, but part of the ritual.
Partial gold plating and patina
There are leaf motifs on the four sides that are gold-plated, while the rest remains silver. In silversmithing, this is called partial gold plating: the piece is first fully chased, then the areas to remain silver are covered, and only the exposed parts are gilded.
The background between the tendrils is intentionally oxidized, or darkened. The contrast brings out both the silver ornament and the golden leaves. These dark zones are intentional and should be preserved when cleaning — anyone who polishes them away strips the plate of its depth.
Material and origin
A silver-plated piece could not be crafted this way — the plating would tear under the hallmark. And it cannot be polished repeatedly because the layer would become thinner. Solid silver tolerates both: the chasing work during creation and the care over generations.
Zaramella Argenti has been crafting in Padua since 1948. The Signature line is the richly chased hallmark of the house.
Also for those who already have the cup
Kiddush cups are often passed down — the matching plate is frequently lost over the generations or was never part of the set. An individually available plate is therefore an obvious gift for someone who already owns the cup.
It complements without replacing. And it fits any standard Kiddush cup with a base.
At the Shabbat table
A Kiddush plate is rarely alone. Shabbat begins with two candles, the cup of wine, and two braided loaves under a cloth. The plate marks the place where the blessing is recited.
Because it remains on the table permanently — even when the cup is being passed around — it is the piece that holds the spot. On an otherwise fully set table, this is its actual task: providing order.
Engraving
The smooth depression is covered when the cup is in place; the underside is suitable for a visible dedication. If you wish to display the plate without the cup, you can also have the well engraved. We will coordinate this with you in advance. Upon request, we will include a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Care
Hand wash with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly. No dishwasher. No polishing paste on the dark parts — it would remove the intentional oxidation. Only wipe the gold-plated leaves dry. Wipe off wine residue promptly. More in our guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver tableware.
Frequently asked questions
Does every Kiddush cup fit in the well?
Standard cup bases will fit. For an exceptionally wide base, please contact us and we will check the dimensions.
Are the dark spots tarnish?
No, they are intentionally oxidized to give the ornament depth. They are part of the piece.
Can I use the plate for other purposes?
Yes. It can hold pastries, chocolates, or a candle and serves as a tray on a dresser.
Does it belong to a cup?
Yes — together with the Kiddush cup with base, it forms the Kiddush set. Both pieces are also available individually.
Is it delivered in a gift box?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacture.
Part of a set
This plate, together with the Kiddush cup with base, forms the Kiddush set. Those who already own the cup can complete their set here with this second piece.
The square shape is the rarer version for Kiddush plates. It has a practical advantage: A square can be aligned with the table edge or place setting, whereas a round plate cannot. Those who prefer the round shape can find it in the plate with approx. 17 cm diameter.
It remains useful even without the cup — as a coaster for a carafe, or as a tray for keys or jewelry on a dresser. A piece from the Signature line that you will see every day, not just on Friday evening.
