Description
The flared foot makes all the difference: this cup stands on the table rather than just resting in your hand. This is the cup for someone who recites the blessing and then sets it down while the wine goes around. Anyone who has ever placed a footless cup on a set table knows the difference.
At a glance
- Kiddush cup made of 925 sterling silver
- Height approx. 9 cm — silver weight approx. 0.23 kg
- Flared base, chased body
- Gold-plated interior
- Zaramella Argenti, Padua — workshop since 1948
Why a foot makes the difference
Kiddush cups come in two basic shapes: as a simple cup without a foot that fits entirely in the hand, and as a cup on a flared base.
The foot has a practical purpose. The blessing is not short, and the cup is filled to the brim. A cup with a wide base can be set down securely in between, without tipping over — and it stands on the set table as an object in its own right, even when no one is holding it.
At approximately 230 grams, this piece is significantly heavier than a cup without a foot. The weight is positioned at the bottom, making it stable.
The Kiddush
The Kiddush — “sanctification” — opens the Sabbath and holidays. The blessing is recited over a cup of wine; afterwards, the person who recited it drinks, and the cup is passed on or the wine is poured into smaller glasses.
The cup is thus among the objects used weekly — unlike the Cup of Elijah, which is on the table once a year for Passover. Anything used weekly should be robust: solid silver, gold-plated interior, no delicate attachments.
The interior gilding
The cup is gold-plated on the inside. Interior gilding has been common for silver drinking vessels for centuries — not as decoration, but because the inside of a cup cannot be polished.
Material and origin
The advantage of solid silver over silver-plated goods is twofold in a cup: chasing is only possible with solid silver — a plating would tear during the hammering process — and the interior gilding protects exactly where one cannot polish. A cup that is filled over decades needs both.
Zaramella Argenti has been manufacturing in Padua since 1948. The ornaments of the Signature line are chased: hammered into the silver by hand with punches, blow by blow, not stamped under a press.
As a gift
For a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, when a child reaches religious maturity and recites the blessing for the first time themselves. For a wedding, when a new household is created. A cup with a base is particularly suitable for this because it maintains its presence even when just standing on the table — visible all year round.
Engraving
The smooth edge of the base can accommodate a name and date. For cups passed down through generations, you will often find several engravings one below the other there. We will advise you in advance regarding placement and size. Upon request, we can enclose a SilberVerse card, 15 × 10 cm, free of charge.
Care
By hand with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft cloth, then dry thoroughly — including the inside. No dishwasher: cleaning salts attack silver and would damage the gilding. Rinse quickly after use so that no wine dries on it. Tarnishing only affects the outside and is reversible with a silver cloth. More in our guide on the care of silver cutlery and silver tableware.
Frequently Asked Questions
How does it differ from a cup without a foot?
It stands securely on the table and is heavier at approx. 230 grams. The cup without a foot fits entirely in the hand and is lighter.
What is the inside of the cup made of?
925 silver with interior gilding, which additionally separates the wine from the metal.
Is the cup kosher?
We carry silver tableware and describe its use — we cannot provide an answer based on religious law. Questions regarding ritual suitability should be answered by your congregation.
Is it also available with a plate?
Yes — together with the plate approx. 16×16 cm as a Kiddush set. We also carry both parts individually.
Is it delivered in gift packaging?
Yes, in high-quality packaging from the manufacturer.
The foot — and what belongs with it
A foot raises the cup by a few centimeters. That sounds like a small detail, but it changes two things in use: the cup can be grasped more securely because the thumb finds support below the bowl, and it stands more stably on a set table.
Together with the square plate approx. 16×16 cm, it forms the Kiddush set. Both parts are also available individually.
Without a foot, but slightly taller, the cup approx. 10 cm stands beside it. With gold accents, the line features the partially gold-plated cup — same height, different appearance.
