With this children's spoon made of 925 sterling silver, it's the story of a galloping horse – finely hand-engraved in niello into the spoon bowl and accented with warm gold. Flowing mane, curved tail, a stylized sun in the background: the motif appears to be in motion, even though it rests in silver. On the back of the handle, a second niello ornament, a teardrop-shaped floral pattern, makes the spoon a small work of art from behind as well.

Material and Craftsmanship

What makes this spoon special is the niello technique – a dark silver-copper-lead-sulfur alloy that is hand-melted into previously engraved lines. Each line of the horse is first hand-engraved into the silver before the niello mass is applied, fired, ground, and polished. It's not an applied color, but a solid, chemical-physical bond with the silver – therefore, the contrast remains even after years of use and deepens with polishing rather than fading. We call this technique Nielloa – our name for the artworks created through this centuries-old craftsmanship. The spoon is made by SevChern, a manufactory from Veliky Ustyug, where niello art has been at home since the 17th century. The gilded areas of the horse provide a warm accent against the cool, highly polished silver and the dark niello lines – three surfaces that give each other depth. The spoon is 925 sterling silver, food-safe, and nickel-free.

Care

Clean the spoon exclusively by hand with warm water and mild dish soap, then dry with a soft cotton cloth. You should avoid silver dipping baths and aggressive cleaning agents – they attack the niello filling and can permanently damage the dark contrasts. The polished silver surfaces can be refreshed with a silver polishing cloth if necessary; the gilding requires no special care but cannot tolerate abrasive cleaners. The spoon is not dishwasher safe and finds a safe place in the included gift box.
