Children's Spoon 925 Silver – Niello Horse Gold

A child’s first spoon can tell a story. This children’s spoon in 925 sterling silver tells the story of a galloping horse, set into the bowl in fine hand-engraved niello and accented with warm gold. Flowing mane, curved tail, a stylized sun in the background: the motif seems to be in motion, even though it rests in silver. A second niello ornament on the back of the handle echoes the design—a teardrop-shaped floral pattern that makes the spoon a little work of art from the back, too.

Material and craftsmanship

What makes this spoon special is the niello technique—a black inlay fused by hand into previously engraved lines, then ground flush and polished, like ink in silver. Each line of the horse is first engraved into the silver by hand before the niello compound is applied, fired, ground and polished. It is not applied paint, but a firmly fused inlay, so the contrast remains even after years of use and tends to deepen with polishing rather than fade. We call this technique Nielloa—our name for the works of art created through this centuries-old craft. The spoon is made by SevChern, a workshop in Veliky Ustyug, where the art of niello has been practiced since the 17th century. The gold-plated areas of the horse add a warm accent against the cool, high-polished silver and dark niello lines—three finishes that lend one another depth. The spoon is made of 925 sterling silver, with 92.5% pure silver.

Collection and motif

The horse is one of the oldest symbolic figures of all: it represents freedom, strength, a love of adventure and the power to follow one’s own path. In the Slavic tradition from which this motif originates, the horse is also a symbol of good luck and safe travels—a faithful companion that finds its way even when its rider does not yet know the way. This makes a lovely message for a birth or baptism gift: that the child will bravely follow their own path, have good fortune by their side and always arrive safely. The spoon bowl depicts the horse in SevChern’s distinctive style—decorative, with clear contours and a stylized sun that adds warmth to the motif.

Occasions and recipients

This children’s spoon is ideal for anyone who wants a silver gift to say more than “congratulations”—for godparents and grandparents looking for a gift with cultural depth, for parents who consciously choose something more distinctive than mass-produced goods, and for lovers of Russian silver art looking to expand their collection. For a birth, it is a first piece of silver with symbolic meaning; for a baptism, a lasting keepsake. It also makes a thoughtful gift for a special birthday—as a small work of art that gains value over time rather than losing it.

Care

Clean the spoon by hand only, using warm water and mild dish soap, then dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Avoid silver dip baths and harsh cleaning agents, as they can damage the niello inlay and permanently affect the dark contrasts. The polished silver surfaces can be refreshed with a silver polishing cloth as needed. The gold plating requires no special care, but should not be cleaned with abrasives. The spoon is not dishwasher-safe and can be stored safely in the included gift box.
