Description
Children's Spoon 925 Silver with Niello Rooster — Gilded Motif from Russian Manufactory
A gilded rooster adorns the inside of the spoon bowl — proudly upright, with a curved tail and decorative plumage. The dark niello lines frame the motif, contrasting it against the polished silver. On the back of the handle, a teardrop-shaped floral ornament in the same niello technique creates a second decorative element, making the spoon an eye-catcher from the back as well. This children's spoon comes from the SevChern manufactory, one of the few workshops worldwide that still master the centuries-old niello finishing technique.

What is Niello? — The Oldest Finishing Technique for Silver
Niello is an alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, applied as a dark paste into pre-engraved ornaments. This process is one of the oldest finishing techniques for precious metals — archaeological findings prove its use as early as antiquity. The creation of a single niello piece involves over 15 individual work processes: First, the motif is hand-engraved into the silver. Then, the niello mass is prepared, heated, and melted into the engraved lines. After cooling, the surface is ground, polished, and — where intended — partially gilded.
In Europe, this technique is rarely practiced today. The SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Russia, is one of the last workshops that execute niello in this quality and tradition. Each spoon bears the hallmark of the executing artist — a sign of individual responsibility for the finished piece.
The Rooster Motif — Courage, Vigilance, and Joy of Life
The rooster on the inside of the spoon bowl is more than a decorative element. In symbolic language, the rooster stands for courage, pride, vigilance, and joy of life. It greets every new day — a morning greeting that marks the beginning of a new chapter. In Slavic tradition, the rooster is also considered a protector against evil spirits and a guardian of the home.
For a gift at birth or baptism, this motif carries a special message: Just as the rooster greets each new day every morning, so too does the birth of a child begin a new chapter full of possibilities. The proud, upright rooster symbolizes the wish that the child will follow their path bravely and confidently — with ambition and the joy of life that each new day holds.
The gilding further highlights the rooster motif. The warm gold of the plumage contrasts with the dark niello engravings and the cool silver — an interplay of three surfaces that gives the motif depth and vibrancy.

Occasions and Target Groups
A children's spoon with niello finishing is not an everyday gift. It is aimed at people who are looking for a silver gift with cultural depth and artistic Anspruch — beyond the usual motifs and designs.
- Birth: As a first silver cutlery with symbolic power — the rooster as a morning greeting for the beginning of a new life
- Baptism: A lasting keepsake with protective symbolism and cultural history
- Special Birthday: For collectors and lovers of Russian silver art — a piece that gains in value
For grandparents and godparents, who are looking for a gift with history — not only materially valuable, but culturally significant.
For collectors of Russian silver art, who want to expand their repertoire with a functional piece of jewelry.
For parents, who consciously choose a gift that stands out from the crowd and tells its own story.
Engraving Service
This children's spoon cannot be engraved due to the double-sided niello ornaments. The spoon bowl features the gilded rooster motif, and the handle features the floral ornament — no free space remains for an engraving without compromising the overall artistic design.
SilberVerse Card — our personal gift card: Even without an engraving, you can add a personal touch to this gift. Upon request, we will design an individual SilberVerse card in photo format (10×15 cm) — matching the occasion, the recipient, and with your personal message. Each card is unique. Simply state your request when ordering, and we will contact you to coordinate the details. Currently free of charge.
Material and Care
The spoon is made of solid 925 Sterling Silver and bears the official silver hallmark as well as the artist's manufacturer's mark. The gilding is applied to the engraved areas of the rooster motif and is permanently bonded to the silver.
Clean the spoon exclusively by hand with warm water and mild dish soap. Then dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Never use silver dips or aggressive cleaning agents — these can attack the niello filling and permanently damage the dark contrasts. For the polished silver surfaces, we recommend a special silver polishing cloth if necessary. The gilding does not require any special care but should not be treated with abrasive cleaners. Not dishwasher safe. The supplied gift box is suitable for storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What exactly is niello and is it safe for babies?
Niello is a dark metal alloy that is melted into engraved ornaments. After cooling, the filling is firmly bonded to the silver and chemically stable. The technique has been used since ancient times and is completely safe when used as intended. The spoon is made of food-safe 925 Sterling Silver.
Can the spoon be engraved?
No. Both sides of the spoon feature niello ornaments — the bowl with the gilded rooster motif, the handle with a floral ornament. An engraving would destroy the overall artistic design. As a personal alternative, we offer the free SilberVerse card.
From what age is the spoon suitable?
From birth as a symbolic gift and collector's item. For first eating attempts under supervision from approx. 6–12 months — depending on the child's development. Due to the artistic finishing, many families keep this spoon more as a keepsake.
Where does the spoon come from and who makes it?
The spoon comes from the SevChern manufactory in Veliky Ustyug, Russia. This city has been the center of Russian niello art since the 17th century. Each piece bears the personal hallmark of the executing artist — a sign of quality that documents individual responsibility for the finished work.
What does the rooster mean as a gift symbol?
The rooster symbolizes courage, pride, vigilance, and joy of life. It greets each new day and stands for the beginning of a new chapter. In Slavic tradition, the rooster is also considered a protector against evil spirits — a symbolically powerful message for the birth or baptism of a child.
