Child's spoon 925 silver - Niello Rooster Gold

Some gifts are simply meant to be beautiful; others can tell a story, too. This children’s spoon in 925 sterling silver belongs to the latter: a proud, gold-plated rooster stands on the bowl of the spoon – head held high, plumage elaborately chased and framed by fine hand-engraved niello. A teardrop-shaped floral ornament on the back of the handle completes the design, also crafted in niello, making the spoon eye-catching from both sides.

Material and craftsmanship

The rooster on this spoon is crafted in niello – a centuries-old technique in which a black inlay is fused by hand into engraved lines, then ground flush and polished, like ink in silver. Every contour of the plumage is first hand-engraved before the niello compound is fired, ground and polished. The result is not a surface-applied color, but a permanent bond with the silver that will not fade over the years; polishing actually enhances the contrast. We call these works of art Nielloa – our name for traditional hand-crafted niello, made by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, the center of Russia’s niello tradition since the 17th century. The rooster’s gold plating creates a warm contrast against the cool, highly polished silver and dark niello lines. The spoon is made of 925 sterling silver (92.5% pure silver).

Collection and motif

In symbolism, the rooster represents courage, pride, vigilance and joie de vivre – it greets each new day, marking the beginning of something new. In Slavic tradition, it is also considered a guardian of the home and a symbol of protection against evil. This makes it especially fitting as a gift for a birth or christening: just as the rooster greets each morning, a child’s arrival begins a new chapter full of possibilities. The upright, confident rooster expresses the wish that the child will go through life with courage and joy. The design follows SevChern’s signature style – decorative, crisply outlined and brought to life by the interplay of gold, niello and polished silver.

Occasions and recipients

This children’s spoon is for anyone looking for a silver gift with cultural depth – beyond the usual motifs. For grandparents and godparents, it is a gift with a story; for parents, a thoughtful alternative to interchangeable mass-produced goods; and for collectors of Russian silver art, a welcome addition. For a birth, it makes a symbolic first silver keepsake; for a christening, a lasting memento with protective symbolism. It can also be given for a special birthday – a small work of art that grows in value over time.

Care

Clean the spoon by hand only, using warm water and mild dish soap, then dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Avoid silver dip baths and harsh cleaning products – they can damage the niello inlay and permanently affect the dark contrast. If needed, the polished silver surfaces can be refreshed with a silver polishing cloth. The gold plating needs no special care, but should not be exposed to abrasives. The spoon is not dishwasher-safe and can be stored safely in the included gift box.
