Children's spoon 925 silver – Niello Bock gold plated

A goat as a children’s spoon motif—unusual, and all the more special for it. In the bowl of this children’s spoon made of 925 sterling silver stands an upright billy goat with striking horns and a proud bearing, gilded in warm gold and framed by fine niello lines. The folkloric depiction, with its suggested apron, calls to mind Russian folk tales. A teardrop-shaped floral ornament in the same niello technique completes the design on the back of the handle.

Material and craftsmanship

The billy goat on this spoon is rendered in niello—a black inlay that is melted by hand into the engraved lines, ground flush and polished, like ink in silver. The horns, suggested fur and upright stance are first engraved by hand, before the niello compound is fired, ground and polished. The result is a permanent bond with the silver, not an applied color—the contrasts last for years and tend to deepen with polishing. We call these works of art Nielloa, our name for the traditional handcraft produced at SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, the center of the Russian niello tradition since the 17th century. The gilding on the goat adds a warm accent against the cool, highly polished silver and dark niello lines. The spoon is made of 925 sterling silver (92.5% pure silver).

Collection and motif

In symbolism, the billy goat represents independence, determination and strength of will—an animal that follows its own path, undaunted and persistent. The proverbial “stubborn goat” is essentially a compliment: it cannot be bent out of shape and stands by what it believes is right. In Slavic folklore, the goat also appears as a mischievous, clever character who handles every situation with wit and resourcefulness—often even outsmarting stronger animals in Russian folk tales. The folkloric depiction, with its suggested apron, draws on this storytelling tradition. As a gift for a birth or baptism, the goat motif conveys the wish that the child will develop an independent character and find their place in the world with intelligence and determination.

Occasions and recipients

This children’s spoon is ideal for anyone looking to give a silver gift with cultural depth and a touch of mischief. For grandparents and godparents, it is a gift with a story; for parents, a thoughtful alternative to interchangeable mass-produced items; and for collectors of Russian silver art, an addition with folkloric charm. For a birth, it makes a first piece of silver imbued with symbolism; for a baptism, a lasting keepsake carrying the message that strength comes from within; and it can also be given for a special birthday.

Care

Clean the spoon by hand only, using warm water and mild dish soap, then dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Avoid silver dip baths and harsh cleaning products—they can damage the niello inlay and permanently affect the dark contrasts. If needed, the polished silver surfaces can be refreshed with a silver polishing cloth. The gilding needs no special care, but should not be exposed to abrasive cleaners. The spoon is not dishwasher-safe and can be stored safely in the included gift box.
