Children's Spoon 925 Silver – Niello Piglet Gold

Not every good-luck charm has to be serious. A cheerful, gold-plated piglet sits in the bowl of this 925 sterling silver children's spoon—round body, big ears, and a face that makes you smile. The crosshatched patterns on its body and the fine niello lines framing the motif bear the distinctive hallmark of Russian silverwork. A teardrop-shaped floral ornament in the same technique adorns the back of the handle.

Materials and craftsmanship

The piglet motif is made using niello—a black inlay, like ink in silver, hand-fused into lines engraved beforehand. Each contour and crosshatched detail on the piglet's body is first engraved by hand, before the niello compound is fired in, ground, and polished. The result is a lasting bond with the silver, not a lacquer or paint—the dark contrasts remain for years and tend to deepen with polishing. We call these works of art Nielloa, our name for the traditional handcraft created at SevChern in Veliky Ustyug, the center of the Russian niello tradition since the 17th century. The piglet's gold plating adds a warm accent against the cool, highly polished silver. The spoon is made of 925 sterling silver containing 92.5% pure silver.

Collection and motif

In almost all European cultures, the pig is one of the most powerful symbols of good luck—as the enduring expression “to get lucky” makes clear. Anyone who owned a pig had enough to eat and need not fear hardship: the animal has long stood for prosperity, abundance, and a carefree life. In Slavic folklore, the piglet also carries a heartwarming meaning—it represents contentment and the joy of simple pleasures, without wishing for more than one needs. As a birth gift, it expresses a lovely wish: that the child will have everything needed for a happy, contented life. Rendered in SevChern's distinctive visual style—with big ears, a friendly face, and crosshatched fur—the motif is both child-friendly and artistically refined.

Occasions and recipients

This children's spoon is ideal for anyone looking to give a silver gift with cultural depth and a touch of humor. For grandparents and godparents, it is a gift with a story; for parents, a thoughtful alternative to interchangeable mass-produced items; and for collectors of Russian silverwork, a charming addition. It makes a first silver keepsake with a heartfelt message for a new baby, a lasting memento for a christening, and a lovely first-birthday gift—a small work of art that brings tradition together with a light touch.

Care

Clean the spoon by hand only, using warm water and mild dish soap, then dry it with a soft cotton cloth. Avoid silver dip baths and harsh cleaning products, as they can damage the niello inlay and permanently harm the dark contrasts. If needed, the polished silver surfaces can be refreshed with a silver polishing cloth. The gold plating requires no special care, but should not be exposed to abrasive cleaners. The spoon is not dishwasher-safe and can be stored safely in the included gift box.
