Material and Workmanship

The three floral groups are symmetrically distributed across the matte silver surface — one at the top, two on the sides — and are entirely in niello black. Unlike the Astra Gold saucer, the Classic version deliberately foregoes gilded accent flowers, showcasing the niello hand engraving in its most original form. Niello is a black metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into the engraved lines and permanently bonds with the silver — not a lacquer, not a coating, but a part of the metal itself. The high-gloss gilded rim frames this ornament, providing the only warm accent on an otherwise matte surface.

Usage and Occasions

With a diameter of 120 mm, this saucer offers a bit more surface area than the Astra Gold version at 110 mm — space for a small pastry or a spoon next to the cup. It fits both teacups in the Astra collection and can therefore be flexibly combined: harmoniously with the Astra Classic teacup or interchangeably with the Astra Gold teacup. Niello inlays are sensitive to mechanical stress, so no dishwasher and no silver dip. Store dry and, if possible, in the gift case.
