Why this is not a Hanukkiah

Both pieces hold nine lights, yet they are fundamentally different.

On a Hanukkiah, eight sockets are at exactly the same height, side by side in a row, and a ninth is raised in the middle — the shamash, with which the others are lit. This arrangement is not a design choice; it follows its use.

This candelabra, however, distributes its nine sockets around the shaft, staggered on two levels. None is elevated, none serves to light the others. It is a table candelabra, not a ritual object — and as such, it is made for any occasion where much light is desired on the table.

What nine flames achieve

A single candle illuminates a radius of about one meter. Nine at the same height do not produce nine times the brightness, but something else: a flat, soft light without the harsh shadows that a single flame casts.

Silver amplifies this. It reflects over 95 percent of visible light — more than any other utilitarian metal. Before electrification, this was why candlesticks were made of silver; today, it is why candlelight on a silver candelabra appears warmer than on a brass one.

The sizes in the series

All three measure approximately 66 cm. What changes is the width of the arm wreath and the weight — from nine to twelve flames, over two and a half kilograms of silver are added.

As an entry into this series, the nine-flame version is sensible: it already appears complete on a table for eight to ten people, without dominating the table.

Where it stands

A candelabra combines in one piece what otherwise requires a pair of candlesticks. This makes it the right form for round tables and for the center of a room: it presents the same image from all sides, whereas a pair of individual candlesticks implies a viewing direction.

On long tables, the opposite proves effective — there, it is preferable to arrange several single-arm candlesticks, tall ones in the middle, shorter ones towards the ends.

At approximately 66 cm, the light is well above the eye level of those seated and falls from above, like a small chandelier. The sightline across the table remains clear.

Even without candles

A candelabra is used perhaps twenty evenings a year. The rest of the time it stands — and that is exactly what the chasing is for. The baluster shaft with its acanthus work and the substantial base support the piece even when no candle is in it.

On a sideboard, a console, or in a tall display cabinet, such a piece is a piece of furniture in itself. Anyone who buys it should plan for its space, as it would be wasted in a cupboard.

Candles and wax

Standard size stick candles. Remove wax residues by briefly chilling the candlestick — then the wax can be peeled off. No knife, no hard edge: silver is softer than steel, and every mark will remain visible.
