Silver bowl for toddlers made of 925 silver Niello 200 ml

Some children's gifts seem understated at first glance — and that is precisely where their strength lies. This silver bowl features neither an animal motif nor a fairy-tale character, but rather a circumferential decorative band: at the top, a dense floral border with vines and rosette blossoms, and below it, a geometric diamond grid that rounds off the floral pattern at the bottom. Two curved hoop handles and a sturdy base give the bowl its clear shape, and the entire pattern is permanently incorporated into the silver using niello — not a print, not a sticker, but part of the metal itself.

Material and craftsmanship

Niello is not a paint or varnish, but a black inlay that is fused into finely engraved lines, sanded flat, and polished – like ink in silver. The floral ornament, the vines, and the diamond grid are first hand-engraved into the silver, then the niello compound is heated and applied into the grooves. After cooling, the surface is polished until the deep black niello is flush with the shiny silver — a contrast that is striking at first glance: the polished silver of the bowl against the deep black of the decorative band. The upper border shows flowers with round flower heads, embedded in vines and leaves, in the classic style of the niello masters from Veliky Ustyug. The bowl is crafted by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug in northern Russia, a center of Russian silver processing since the 17th century. Niello works from Veliky Ustyug have been documented since 1683.

Collection

This bowl follows the shape of a classic bouillon bowl: deeper than a flat plate, with a round base and two symmetrically attached hoop handles. With a diameter of 95 mm and a height of 72 mm, it offers enough depth for porridge, soup, or soft food, and a 200 ml capacity is the right size for small children. The base provides the bowl with a secure footing and visually elevates the decorative band so that the niello pattern is visible at eye level when the bowl is on a child's table. The two handles allow for a secure grip for small hands. At approx. 195 g, it is heavy enough for stability and light enough for daily use. The inner basin remains smoothly polished and without decoration — the entire ornament is on the outer wall, easy to clean and without a pattern that interferes with eating.

Special features

The floral niello ornament is not an animal picture or a fairy-tale figure, but an abstract floral border — classic, symmetrical, timeless. This makes this piece a gift with no upper age limit: a bowl that a child receives for a baptism will still feature the same ornament at ten years old, and it will look just as it did on the first day. Plant motifs in many traditions stand for growth, flourishing, and vitality — a quiet gift with its own deep symbolism that does not need to be explained through a figure, but through the ornament itself. The circumferential, closed band is also a characteristic feature of the SevChern niello tradition: without beginning and without end, fully encompassing the bowl.

Occasions and target groups

The floral pattern is gender-neutral and appeals to girls and boys alike. As a baptism gift, birth gift, or keepsake for a birth, this bowl accompanies a child initially as everyday tableware for porridge and soup, later as a preserved memento. The niello decorative band remains unchangeable and permanent — an image as old as the silver itself.

Engraving and SilberVerse card

After checking, a personal engraving is possible — a name, a date, or a short sentence. An engraved silver bowl thus belongs clearly to this child and this moment. Upon request, we can also include a personal SilberVerse card in photo format (15 × 10 cm landscape format) — individually designed, suitable for the occasion, and free of charge.

Care

925 sterling silver with niello decor is easier to care for than many think. Hand washing with warm water and mild dish soap is sufficient, along with a soft cloth for drying. No dishwasher, no aggressive cleaning agents, no silver dip bath. A light tarnish layer can be removed with a silver polishing cloth — the niello itself remains insensitive to normal care.

Frequently asked questions

What motif does the niello band on this bowl feature?
The circumferential decorative band consists of two parts: at the top, a floral border with rosette blossoms, vines, and leaves, and below it, a geometric diamond grid. There is no animal motif and no figurative representation, only the classic floral ornament in the style of the niello tradition of Veliky Ustyug.

For which occasions is this bowl suitable as a gift?
Baptism, birth, first birthday, or Christmas. The ornamental niello pattern is timeless and gender-neutral, fits any age, and accompanies the child from baptism as a memento.

What distinguishes 925 silver from silver-plated children's tableware?
Silver-plated children's tableware has only a thin layer of silver on a base metal, which wears off over time. 925 sterling silver is solid — the same precious metal inside and out, without a layer that could peel off.
