Material and craftsmanship

Niello is not a paint or varnish, but a black metal alloy of silver, copper, lead, and sulfur, which is melted into finely engraved depressions. The floral ornament, the tendrils, and the diamond lattice are first hand-engraved into the silver, then the niello mass is heated and applied to the grooves. After cooling, the surface is polished until the deep black niello is flush with the shiny silver – a contrast that makes an immediate impression: the polished silver of the bowl against the deep black of the ornamental band. The upper border shows flowers with round blossoms, embedded in tendrils and leaves, in the classic style of the niello masters from Veliky Ustyug. The bowl is made by SevChern in Veliky Ustyug in northern Russia, a center of Russian silver craftsmanship since the 17th century. Niello work from Veliky Ustyug has been documented since 1683 and bears a geographically protected designation of origin. The hallmark on this bowl confirms 925 Sterling Silver, a Russian state hallmark, and the manufacturer's mark SevChern.
