Material and Workmanship

Each cup feels substantial in hand – solid 925 silver with a clear, cylindrical shape. The upper rim is broadly framed in gold, below which a band of black niello ornament wraps around the cup: a stylized flower with a rosette, framed by leaves and tendrils. The gilding is applied in multiple stages: The interior is fully gilded – this protects the silver from vodka and fruit brandy and imparts no foreign taste – the upper rim features a broad gold line, and even the fine silver lines of the hand engraving are individually regilded. A detail that is barely noticeable in the photo but immediately perceptible in hand. The silversmith performs the engraving by hand, not by machine – small differences between the two cups in the set are normal and not a flaw.

Use and Occasions

The cups are intended for ice-cold vodka: briefly place the spirit and cups together in the freezer, then remove them just before pouring. The silver further cools the drink as it is poured – an effect that glass or porcelain cannot achieve. As a gift, the set is suitable for a silver wedding anniversary, a significant birthday, a name day, retirement, or as an appreciation for a stylish business partner. Care

Wash by hand only, with lukewarm water. Never put in the dishwasher – the hot detergent attacks the gilding. Dry immediately after rinsing; a soft cloth is sufficient. Do not scrub the interior gilding; do not use scouring powder. The niello black remains dark on its own. A silver polishing cloth helps with slight tarnishing of the polished silver.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are the cups gilded on the inside?

Gold protects the silver from alcohol and acid, imparts no foreign taste, and creates a warm contrast to the black niello on the outside. This has long been the practice in Russian silversmithing tradition.

Are both cups in the set exactly the same?

No, and that is a sign of quality. Each cup is hand-engraved and nielloed – there are slight differences in the ornament between the two, which are not a defect but proof of genuine hand engraving.

Can I expand the set to four or six cups?
